Thrillers have been some of the most versatile and striking genres of filmmaking throughout film history, with the genre continuing to have exceptional films year after year. The 2020s as a whole have been a great time for thrillers so far, with films like Oppenheimer, Conclave, and One Battle After Another leaving a massive impact. However, the decade is far from over, and 2026 has a wide array of notable thrillers that are worth getting excited about.
2026 has already had some well-made thriller releases, including Crime 101 and Send Help, but there’s much thriller greatness still to come. From pictures that have already received rave reviews following their premieres at festivals to the latest efforts from highly acclaimed cinematic legends, thriller filmmaking is in a great spot in 2026, thanks in part to these highly exciting films.
‘Tuner’ – Release Date: May 29th, 2026
A compelling heist thriller from Academy Award-winning documentary director Daniel Roher, Tuner acts as Roher’s debut into narrative filmmaking, featuring an engaging, layered premise that immediately hooks the audience and demands to be watched. The film follows Leo Woodall as Niki, a talented piano tuner who has a brilliant affinity for perfectly tuning pianos. However, his life is suddenly shaken when he makes the unlikely discovery that his talents also work incredibly well towards cracking safes, finding a much more dangerous method of earning money.
Tuner has had the luxury of already premiering at multiple film festivals over the past few months, wowing the audiences and critics who attended Telluride, TIFF, and Sundance in the past year. The film already has an exemplary 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, who have been quick to praise the film for its compelling setup, effective sense of humor, and the great star power of Woodall in the lead role. Premiering in just about 2 months, Tuner is an under-the-radar thriller that shouldn’t be missed.
‘Verity’ – Release Date: October 2nd, 2026
No author has made such an immediate name for themselves thanks to their wildly successful film adaptations quite like Colleen Hoover. Her various romance adaptations have a dedicated audience who love her distinct style and tackling of hard-hitting emotions. However, unlike previous Hoover adaptations that were largely in the romantic drama genre, Verity stands out as being a full-on mystery thriller and easily one of her darkest books.
This adaptation comes from acclaimed director Michael Showalter and has an exceptional cast of all-star talent, including Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett. The film follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson) accepting a life-changing job offer to complete the remaining books in a bestselling thriller series, following a mysterious accident hindering the work of the author Verity Crawford (Hathaway). However, upon Ashleigh’s arrival on the Crawford estate, she soon begins to realize that things are not as they appear.
‘Mother Mary’ – Release Date: April 17th, 2026
The third collaboration between A24 and director David Lowery, following his previous successes with A Ghost Story and The Green Knight, Mother Mary is a wild combination of various genres that has all the pieces for yet another great A24 thriller. The film follows the iconic titular pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reuniting with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) to create a brilliant outfit on the eve of her comeback performance.
It’s clear while watching the trailer that so much of it is shrouded in mystery and intrigue, as its blend of horror, music, and thriller genres is fascinating enough to make it worth a watch by itself. However, Lowery is such a master of tone and somber styling in his films that it’s difficult to imagine this film failing to make an absolute splash. It’s also less than a month away from coming out, so audiences won’t have to wait long to experience its greatness.
‘The Weight’ – Release Date: September 18th, 2026
One of the most acclaimed films to come out of the Sundance Film Festival just a few months ago, The Weight made a massive impact as a stylized, emotionally layered period thriller that blends emotion and tight-knit action to create what could be a new thriller classic. The film takes place in 1933 Oregon, following Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke) being painfully split apart from his daughter and forced to work in a brutal work camp. However, he is enticed with an early release if he and a crew work to smuggle gold through the deadly wilderness, setting into motion a high-stakes adventure with danger and emotion around every corner.
Many critics have made the comparison that The Weight is harkening back to a classic era of hardened, striking adventure thrillers that simply aren’t being made nearly as much anymore. Its originality made it an absolute fan-favorite of the festival, thanks in part to its top-notch execution and a raving performance from Hawke. The film already has a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and has plans to release in September after being picked up by Vertical.
‘The Death of Robin Hood’ – Release Date: June 19th, 2026
Robin Hood is arguably one of the most recognizable literary characters of all time, so cinematic explorations of the character and remixing the classic themes of his tale are far from new material. However, the proven directorial strength of Michael Sarnoski (Pig, A Quiet Place: Day One), and Hugh Jackman playing an older, more reserved Robin makes The Death of Robin Hood all the more engaging as a dark fantasy thriller.
The film follows Robin Hood as an aged, reclusive man, grappling with his past full of crime and murder and dealing with the mental hurdles of living with the pain he has inflicted. After being gravely injured in a battle that he believed would be his last, he finds an unlikely chance at salvation thanks to the kindhearted help of a mysterious woman (Jodie Comer). The trailer especially plays up the scope and scale of this non-traditional Robin Hood adaptation, with the full feature film hopefully being able to deliver the potential that the trailer sets up.
‘The End of Oak Street’ – Release Date: August 14th, 2026
Previously known under the title of “Flowervale Street,” The End of Oak Street has been a widely anticipated sci-fi thriller for years, with it seeming to finally be getting a release at the end of summer this year. This new feature film from David Robert Mitchell will act as the acclaimed director’s newest film since Under the Silver Lake in 2018, leaving many dedicated fans of his work patiently waiting for him to deliver another engaging thriller.
Considering the flair and cult classic appeal of the director’s previous films, it isn’t exactly surprising that his latest release has had all sorts of hype being built up towards it, especially since it had been delayed multiple times and so much of the plot has been kept in secrecy. What is known is that it will star Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as a family who start to notice an array of unusual occurrences happening in their neighborhood.
‘The Rivals of Amziah King’ – Release Date: August 14th, 2026
While the film may have premiered at SXSW over a full year ago in 2025, the massively acclaimed Matthew McConaughey crime thriller The Rivals of Amziah King seems to finally be getting a wide release in theaters in 2026. This neo-western dramedy thriller has been the topic of high praise and potential awards contention ever since its premiere, with audiences waiting with bated breath as to when the film would finally be picked up and given a wide release.
With an exceptional 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics already, the film was already setting up the potential to be one of McConaughey’s greatest works and an exceptional, emotional story of refuge that could be one of the year’s best films. The film sees McConaughey as the titular Amziah King, a foster parent mentoring one of his former foster children (Angelina LookingGlass) in rural Oklahoma to help her seek justice for those who murdered her mother.
‘Wild Horse Nine’ – Release Date: November 6th, 2026
Few names have been as consistent in terms of brilliant original storytelling quality in recent years as Martin McDonagh, with Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri among the best thrillers of the 21st century. McDonagh looks to continue his legacy with yet another brilliant comedic thriller in Wild Horse Nine, utilizing charming characters and great comedic banter for a film that may yet again give him success on the awards circuit.
The film sees John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as CIA agents who have been dispatched to Easter Island, with their trip bringing up a mixture of dark pasts as well as wild conspiracies in the present. It doesn’t take long before their trip to this remote paradise completely goes sideways in a wild blaze of rebellion and confusion. While audiences will have to wait a while before getting a chance to see the film this winter, it will almost assuredly be worth the longer wait for what could easily be 2026’s best comedy thriller.
‘The Dog Stars’ – Release Date: August 28th, 2026
Ridley Scott has made a monumental name for himself in the world of science fiction, creating some of the most timeless masterpieces that the genre has ever seen. While the director hasn’t had a new sci-fi film since 2017’s Alien Covenant, 2026 looks to shake things up with the release of his highly anticipated sci-fi thriller, The Dog Stars. Adapted from the 2012 novel of the same name, this post-apocalyptic sci-fi film has all the potential to be another banger from the director.
The film sees the world’s population having been ravaged by a pandemic, following a lonesome man (Jacob Elordi) living in a Colorado airplane hangar with his dog and a depressed gunman. However, when a mysterious transmission comes through on the radio while he’s flying his old plane, it creates newfound hope for him as he goes on the hunt for the source of the sound. With a high budget and an array of other top-notch stars attached, The Dog Stars could easily be the sci-fi thriller masterpiece that caps off the summer movie season.
‘Disclosure Day’ – Release Date: June 12th, 2026
Steven Spielberg has created many masterpieces in all different stages of his career, and while the thriller genre may not be the one immediately associated with the filmmaking icon, he has certainly created his fair share of thriller masterpieces. This all comes to a head when considering that his highly anticipated summer blockbuster, Disclosure Day, is not only his first thriller in over a decade, but it’s his first-ever sci-fi thriller not adapted from pre-existing material.
More than any other thriller to be released in 2026, Disclosure Day has the potential to have the biggest immediate cultural impact, delivering on a massive hot streak that Spielberg has been on following the release of West Side Story and The Fabelmans. Especially with so much unknown still following the film after the release of its trailer, it’s not just the most anticipated thriller of the year, but arguably one of the biggest, most exciting films that 2026 has to offer.
