2 planes collide midair at northern Colorado airport

One person died and three were injured Sunday morning after two planes collided midair at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport.

A Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 were both trying to land at the Fort Morgan airport when they crashed and caught fire at about 10:40 a.m. Sunday, according to an emailed statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. The agency first said the crash happened at about 12:10 p.m. Sunday, but later corrected the time.

One person on board the Extra Flugzeugbau EA300 died at the scene of the crash, and paramedics took a second person to the hospital, according to a news release from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.

The pilot and passenger in the Cessna sustained minor injuries and were released at the scene of the crash, sheriff’s officials said.

The victim killed in the crash will be identified by the Morgan County Coroner’s Office, which is assisting in the investigation, according to the news release.

Images from an FAA weather camera showed a plume of smoke just north of the airport Sunday morning, according to Denver7. The airport is about 5 miles north of Fort Morgan, off Colorado 52.
