2 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movies Just Took Massive Steps Forward

Fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise just got a major update on the future of the Heroes in a Half Shell.

Per Deadline, the recently closed Skydance-Paramount merger has officially paved the way for not one, but two new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature films to enter development. It was reported that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have officially returned for a follow-up to the 2023 animated hit, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which will be produced alongside Jeff Rowe and directed by Kyler Spears and Yashar Kassai. The hotly-anticipated sequel has also secured a Sep. 17, 2027 release date.

To top things off, the company is now eying a live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles feature film that will be based on the long-running comic book series, although there is no indication as to exactly which iteration of the series it will follow. Paramount’s new CEO David Ellison said in a recent statement that “One of our biggest priorities is restoring Paramount as the No. 1 studio for filmmakers and talent in the world… For us, we’re going to strategically scale the amount of content for our streaming service as well as studios,” implying a whole host of further productions to come.

Directed by Jeff Rowe from a screenplay co-written along with Rogen, Goldberg, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem arrived in theaters in 2023 to an overwhelmingly positive response from critics and audiences alike. The latest take on the long-running franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem features the voices of Nicolas Cantu, Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., and Brady Noon as Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael, as well as Ayo Edebiri, John Cena, Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Giancarlo Esposito, and Jackie Chan in the roles of April O’Neil, Rocksteady, Bebop, Leatherhead, Baxter Stockman, and Splinter. This star-studded voice cast helped catapult the film’s box office return to the tune of $180.5 million against a budget of $70 million. Since its release, fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the tension of which was somewhat saved by the release of the 2024 follow-up television series.

For longtime fans of the franchise, there might be no better movie than 1990’s live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which just so happens to be heading back to theaters in celebration of its 35th anniversary. Directed by Steve Barron, who will offer one-on-one commentary during a short featurette shown alongside the film, 1990’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles continues to be a fan-favorite nearly four decades later, so much so that the upcoming 35th anniversary theatrical re-release had to be extended by more than double its original run. As of now, fans can get their tickets to select screenings of the film, which will run from Aug. 16 to Aug. 20 courtesy of Fathom Events.
