People We Meet on Vacation
Book-to-movie adaptations make up some of the most polarizing movies on a release calendar. These movies have dedicated audiences who want to see accurate depictions of what happened on the pages. Netflix’s latest adaptation, People We Meet on Vacation, is based on the beloved bestseller from author Emily Henry.
Poppy (Emily Bader) and Alex (Tom Blyth) are total opposites. Poppy is an eccentric nonconformist, while Alex is more by-the-book and regimented. They say opposites attract, and these two become best friends. Despite living in different cities, the duo continue to vacation together every summer.
Any rom-com expert will know what’s coming next: Should these two friends be lovers? It’s the classic will-they-won’t-they trope that constantly finds its way into romantic comedies. Just because the trope is popular does not make it ineffective. Bader and Blyth are dynamite together, giving this popular book the adaptation it deserves.

No Time to Die
When Amazon closed its deal to acquire MGM in 2022, the media conglomerate gained access to the James Bond franchise. The 007 titles have predominantly lived on Amazon Prime Video. However, Amazon recently struck a deal to license certain media properties to Netflix, including Bond movies. Several of the movies have already shot into the top 10, including No Time to Die, the final Bond movie for Daniel Craig.
After four Bond movies, Daniel Craig officially said goodbye to 007 in No Time to Die. The aging Bond believes he might have a future with Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), but that dream dies after being attacked by Spectre mercenaries. Five years later, Bond is recruited by his CIA buddy, Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), to help rescue a scientist working for bioterrorist Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek).
No Time to Die still has its pulse-pounding action, with the sequence featuring Craig and Ana de Armas being the standout. No Time to Die might also be the grittiest version of Bond to date. The daring swan song even takes a dark turn and goes against the grain with how Bond’s journey ends. It’s not Craig’s best outing as 007, but it might be the boldest.

The Talented Mr. Ripley
Damon is currently the star of The Rip, one of the most popular movies on Netflix right now. In the movie, Damon plays a morally ambiguous cop who may or may not be dirty. Damon has predominantly played the good guy in most of his movies, so whenever he can showcase some hint of villainy, it’s a refreshing take.
While Damon has some hints of heroism in The Rip, he fully “breaks bad” in The Talented Mr. Ripley, Anthony Minghella’s sensational adaptation of the landmark novel by Patricia Highsmith. Tom Ripley (Damon) is a New York City con man looking for his next score. In 1958, Tom gets the opportunity of a lifetime when a wealthy mogul (James Rebhorn) hires him to convince his son, Dickie (Jude Law), to return to the United States from Italy.
Tom finds Dickie, but instead of convincing him to return to the U.S., he befriends him and immerses himself in the culture. Like any good con artist, Tom successfully pulls off his ruse, but the lie spirals out of control, leading him to do whatever it takes to keep his new life. The Talented Mr. Ripley is a terrific example of a perfect thriller—one backed by exquisite performances, enigmatic storylines, and gut-punching scenes.

Rebel Ridge
Sometimes a movie on Netflix can sneak up and surprise you. For me, that would be Rebel Ridge, an action thriller by genre filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier. Aaron Pierre plays Terry Richmond, a Marine veteran who strolls into a small Louisiana town with bail money for his cousin. Upon arrival, two corrupt cops run Terry off the road and take his money through a loophole called civil forfeiture.
From there, Rebel Ridge plays like a Western, with Terry serving as the outlaw who disrupts the status quo and fights for justice. Terry’s main adversary becomes Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson), who has no intention of giving back the money his department stole. Terry gains an ally in Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb), a courthouse employee tired of the deception in her town.
Rebel Ridge is a star-is-born moment for Pierre, who commands the screen with physicality, stoicism, and bravado. I could watch the P-A-C-E scene on a loop. This style of B-grade, gritty thriller should be the movie Netflix focuses on for original content. More Rebel Ridges and fewer Electric States.
