‘The Matrix Reloaded’ (2003)
Following the success of 1999’s The Matrix, The Wachowskis returned to write and direct the sequel, The Matrix Reloaded, which is set six months after the events of the first film. The movie sees Neo, Morpheus, and Trinity attempt to reach the Source of the Matrix to end the ongoing war with the sentient machines, while the city of Zion prepares for a massive invasion by them. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Gloria Foster reprise their roles from the previous film, with Jada Pinkett Smith joining the cast.
The second installment in The Matrix franchise, The Matrix Reloaded was part of a broader push to further expand the series’ story through the video game Enter the Matrix and the anime anthology The Animatrix, making the sequel’s world much broader than that of the first film. ‘Inception’ (2010)
An Academy Award-winning sci-fi film directed by Christopher Nolan, Inception follows a professional thief, Dominick “Dom” Cobb, who steals information from people by infiltrating their subconscious. When Cobb targets Japanese businessman Saito, he instead offers Cobb a deal: a clean slate in exchange for planting a sinister idea in the mind of his enemy’s son. ‘Avatar’ (2009)
An epic sci-fi adventure written and directed by James Cameron, Avatar is set in the mid-22nd century, with humans colonizing a lush habitable moon called Pandora to mine a rare mineral. When Jake, a paraplegic marine, replaces his brother on Pandora for a corporate mission and befriends the land’s indigenous humanoid species, the Na’vi, he begins to see his mission, his life, and his loyalties from a new perspective. ‘Moon’ (2009)
Directed by Duncan Jones in his directorial debut, Moon follows Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell), a solitary energy worker mining power on the far side of the Moon, living alongside GERTY, an artificial intelligence who serves as his companion. Nearing the end of his three-year contract, Sam meets with a near-fatal accident and wakes up to find everything around him changed. Kevin Spacey voices GERTY, and the film also features Dominique McElligott, Kaya Scodelario, Benedict Wong, Matt Berry, and Malcolm Stewart in supporting roles.
Even though the film has several characters, Moon focuses almost exclusively on Sam and his interactions with his machine companion, turning the film into a compelling character study. ‘A.I. Artificial Intelligence’ (2001)
A unique collaboration of the cinematic geniuses of Stanley Kubrick and Steven Spielberg, A.I. Artificial Intelligence is a sci-fi drama loosely adapted from Brian Aldiss’ 1969 short story “Supertoys Last All Summer Long.” Set in a futuristic society, the film follows David (Haley Joel Osment), a highly advanced childlike android, who is abandoned by his foster parents following an incident.
