How docs at KIMS ICON Hospital saved life of patient suffering from pancreatic abscess

Visakhapatnam: Doctors at KIMS ICON Hospital in Visakhapatnam successfully treated a life-threatening pancreatic abscess using a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure.

The case involved a 44-year-old patient who had been experiencing severe abdominal pain for nearly two months. Initially diagnosed with acute pancreatitis at a local hospital, the patient underwent standard treatment. However, his condition gradually deteriorated, leading to the formation of a large infected fluid collection around the pancreas. He continued to suffer from persistent fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, and difficulty in consuming food.

Upon approaching KIMS ICON Hospital for advanced care, doctors conducted detailed investigations, including blood tests and a CT scan. The reports revealed a large infected pancreatic pseudocyst.

The medical team opted for an Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)-guided minimally invasive procedure. During the intervention, doctors placed a metal stent to drain nearly one litre of infected fluid (pus) from the affected area.

Following the procedure, the patient showed rapid improvement. He resumed oral intake within two hours, experienced significant pain relief, and was discharged within 48 hours.

Doctors stated that conventional surgical treatment in such cases typically involves a longer recovery time and a higher risk. The successful outcome highlights the growing effectiveness of EUS-guided minimally invasive techniques in managing complex pancreatic conditions.

The procedure was performed by Senior Consultant Interventional Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist Dr. Sunil Raviraj, along with gastroenterologists Dr. Sivakrishna Sirasapalli and Dr. Gangadhar Malla, who emphasized their expertise in treating complex pancreatic disorders through advanced endoscopic methods.
