I tested the Dyson Airwrap i.d. Curly + Coily on my hair — the hype is completely justified
There are hair tools, and then there are hair tools that make you wonder what you’ve been doing for the past decade. The Dyson Airwrap i.d. Curly + Coily is firmly in the second category.
I’ll admit I came to this late. This is my first Dyson product and I’ll also admit that the price tag gave me pause. But after two months of near-daily use, I can say with some confidence: the hype is real, and more importantly for those of us with type 3-4 curls, Dyson has finally done the work to earn it.
What’s changed with the i.d. Curly+Coily isn’t just the attachments — though we’ll get to those, because they deserve their own conversation. It’s the sense that this styler was built with textured hair genuinely in mind, rather than adapted for it as an afterthought.

Think of it the way you’d think about a good vacuum or a quality mattress: you get what you pay for, and with Dyson, what you’re paying for is immediately apparent from the moment you open the box.
Dyson Airwrap i.d. Curly + Coily: Design
Everything about the Airwrap i.d. communicates that this is a serious piece of kit. I have mine in Ceramic Pink/Rose Gold, which looks every bit as good on the shelf as it does in product shots — but if that’s not your palette, Amber Silk and Prussian Blue/Rich Copper are equally striking.
The magnetic attachments click in and out with a satisfying precision that makes switching mid-session feel effortless. The new Conical Airwrap barrel has a tapered tip that’s been engineered to style closer to the root than previous versions — a small design change with a real impact on definition and bounce for tighter curl patterns.
The Wave+Curl diffuser is a new format entirely, with two distinct airflow modes built into a single attachment: Dome mode for enhancing and defining natural curl patterns, and Diffuse mode for adding root volume and texture. One attachment doing two jobs is exactly the kind of considered design decision that runs through the whole tool.
Everything comes stored in a larger presentation case that protects all the attachments neatly, and if you’ve ever tipped a bag upside down looking for a barrel you definitely put in there, you’ll appreciate it more than you might expect.

Let’s start with the heat claim, because it’s the one I was most sceptical about. Dyson’s position is that damage occurs above 150°C, and that the Airwrap measures temperature 40 times per second to stay below that threshold.
As someone who has always prioritised hair health above everything else, I raised an eyebrow. Two months in, I’ve been converted. Here’s what each attachment actually does, and which ones are worth getting excited about.
Wave+Curl Diffuser
The diffuser is exceptional, and if you diffuse regularly, this is the attachment you’ll reach for most. It’s large and deep enough to hold a full head of type 3 hair, and the curved shape sits properly against the skull when diffusing upside down, giving you movement and control that a flat or shallow diffuser simply can’t match.
The two modes make it genuinely versatile: Dome mode gives you that cushion of air that enhances and defines curl patterns without disturbing them, while Diffuse mode lifts at the root for volume and texture.
And the results: less frizz, better definition, more volume, are visible after every use.
Conical Airwrap Barrel
The conical barrel’s tapered tip reaches closer to the root than previous Airwrap barrels, which makes a real difference for tighter curl patterns that need definition all the way up rather than just at the ends.
The curls it produces are bouncy and well-formed, though I’d recommend a light hairspray and pinning sections while they cool if you want them to hold. Curls will drop without it, but that’s a feature of curl behaviour rather than a flaw in the tool — I think.
Wide-Tooth Comb
The wide-tooth comb is the surprise highlight of the whole package. A heated attachment that stretches, shapes, and detangles as it dries sounds straightforward, but in practice it’s incredibly versatile.
I’ve used it for root diffusing, for smoothing sections before curling, and on days when I want to lengthen and define without fully committing to a style. I used this on my mom’s type 4 hair and she remarked on the lack of snagging, or pulling.
This kind of innovation alone makes a compelling case for the whole tool, t’s the kind of thing you didn’t know you needed until you’ve used it and now I wouldn’t be able to go without it.
Blowout Attachments
The Fast Dryer, Anti Snag Loop Brush, and Large Round Volumising Brush round out the kit for anyone who wears their hair straight or wants a classic blowout finish.
The Anti Snag Loop Brush in particular is well-designed — Dyson-engineered bristles that move through hair without pulling, which is the detail that makes or breaks a brush for anyone with finer or more fragile strands.
With a curly cut, a full blowout isn’t something I reach for regularly, but experimenting with these attachments was genuinely enjoyable, and the results were impressive. If a smooth finish is part of your regular rotation, you won’t be disappointed.
The i.d. Feature
The one element I expected to love and didn’t is the i.d. functionality. Setting up your profile in the MyDyson app: questions about your hair type, length, and styling skill — is an intuitive and enjoyable process, and discovering that the app officially classifies my hair as long was its own small revelation.
But the automated styling routine it generates isn’t something I’ve found myself using in practice. It’s a feature that will genuinely suit those newer to styling textured hair, and the app itself is well-designed and easy to navigate. For anyone with an established routine though, it’s easy (and fine) to set aside.

Yes, it’s expensive, and I know there’s some great dupes out there, but the Airwrap i.d. Curly + Coily is the rare product that genuinely justifies every cent. From the presentation case to the attachments themselves, nothing about this feels like a compromise.
After years of reaching for a nourishing mask after every heat styling session, I didn’t have to with this. My hair came out looking and feeling healthy — and that, more than any spec, is the most convincing endorsement I can give.
For type 4 hair especially, the wide-tooth comb is a genuine game changer in the way detangles, stretches, and shapes as it dries. And the conical barrel reaches closer to the root than anything I’ve used before. For curls that need definition all the way up, that difference is immediately visible.

In the interest of balance, the i.d. feature won’t be for everyone. If you already have an established routine, you’ll likely bypass it entirely after the first week.
And yes, the price. It’s an investment by any measure, and that’s worth acknowledging — even if, in this case, it’s one that pays for itself every time you use it.
