All DC Movies Canceled by James Gunn Before DCU – Comic Book Movies and Superhero Movie News

James Gunn and Peter Safran’s vision for the DCU is being received quite warmly now, especially with the success of Superman. However, to reach here, the co-CEOs had to make some big sacrifices, i.e., multiple movie cancellations. As it turns out, when Gunn took over, many planned and proposed DC movies were canceled to make way for new projects more aligned with the template of the new DCU.

List of all DC movies that James Gunn canceled before starting DCU

Here are some exciting DC projects that have been canceled since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over.

Wonder Woman 3

The controversial choice of not going forward with Wonder Woman 3 was a huge topic of discussion after Gunn and Safran took over. Wonder Woman was one of the rare DCEU movies to gain critical acclaim. But with the DCU rebooting, the new management chose to go with a new Wonder Woman, putting the third outing to bed.

Black Adam 2

It would be unwise to say that Black Adam was among the finest DC movies. But it indicated in every way that there will be a sequel. However, with Gunn and Safran taking over, this also never materialized. Dwayne Johnson confirmed back in 2022 that Black Adam 2 would not be part of the DCU’s “first chapter of storytelling.”

Supergirl featuring Sasha Calle

There will still be a Supergirl movie, and it will come out very soon. But it will not be Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. The actress played the character in The Flash (2023) and was expected to return for a solo film. But now, a different Supergirl film is coming, and Milly Alcock will lead it as the titular character.

Gotham City Sirens

There were many rumors about Gotham City Sirens potentially being a sequel to Birds of Prey. But this project was always in the realm of rumors, and as it turns out, the new direction of the studio means that the rumors will never be true.

Batman Beyond

After Caped Crusader’s return in The Flash (2023), there were rumors that there would be a new project with Michael Keaton as Batman. The movie was never officially announced, but rumors suggested that Birds of Prey’s Christina Hodson was ready to work as the writer on the project. This project was reportedly canceled in December 2022. This was just after Safran and Gunn took over DCU.

Henry Cavill’s potential Man of Steel sequel

Along with Black Adam 2, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam also teased the return of Henry Cavill’s Superman. This hints that DC had plans to do another movie with Cavill as Superman. But the plans changed when James Gunn restarted the universe with a different Superman adaptation.

Though these films will never happen, there are plenty of other projects coming from the new DCU for fans to look forward to.
