We haven’t looked at chicken noodle soup the same way since Weapons. Zach Cregger’s hit horror movie, about a suburban community in collapse after an elementary school classroom vanishes without a trace, lit up the summer box office by taking the number one spot in its opening weekend. If you haven’t seen it yet, definitely run to theaters—arms sloped downward, of course.
As I wrote in my review, Weapons is a “thoughtful and metaphor-heavy exploration of toxic family relationships, domestic abuse, and our appalling ineptitude regarding caring for our children” alongside gruesomely great splatterpunk violence.
But we get it: It’s a lot to carve out time to drive your rear to a movie theater. If these last few weeks of summer are simply too busy to watch a movie, you can be assured that Weapons is headed to streaming soon, and probably sooner than later. But when? And where? Here’s how you can watch Weapons from the comfort of your home. (Not that it’ll make the movie any less frightening.)
When Is Weapons Streaming?
Weapons is sure to stream on HBO Max later this winter. As I wrote in my Sinners streaming guide: Since 2024, Warner Bros. has made all its new release movies available to stream on HBO Max after a period of 80 days from when the movie ends its theatrical run. These days, theatrical runs are short, averaging just 30-45 days even for major hit movies. Unexpectedly, movie theaters are currently lobbying for a minmum of 45 days for new movies, but the results of their efforts have yet to be seen.
For now, a 45-day window from Weapons‘ August 9 release date means it will most likely end its theatrical run on or around September 23. Adding 80 days on top of that, it will be approximately December 12 when Weapons finally ends up on HBO Max. It might be past Halloween, but there’s no better Christmas gift than to watch a legitimately great horror movie on demand.
Meanwhile, there’s also the option to rent or purchase Weapons on digital platforms like Amazon, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home. While there isn’t an exact date for the movie’s digital release, it’s certainly going to happen before it hits streaming on HBO Max. Maybe you’ll get to see Weapons in time for Halloween, after all. No tricks here, just treats.
However you watch Weapons, be sure to pair it as a double feature with either Ryan Coogler’s Sinners or Cregger’s previous movie, Barbarian. You’re in for the fright of your life.
