The much-talked-about sequel to Rowdy Rathore (2012) is no longer happening. After three years of back-and-forth, producers Shabinaa Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have reportedly decided to scrap Rowdy Rathore 2. Instead, the script that was originally meant for the sequel will now be turned into a fresh film.

Industry insiders revealed that Disney India, which co-owns the rights to Rowdy Rathore with Bhansali (through its acquisition of UTV Motion Pictures), was not keen on giving the sequel a green light. Despite several discussions, no progress was made. “With Disney not committing, the makers chose to drop the idea of a sequel and develop the Story as an independent film,” a source told Bollywood Hungama.

The script has been written by noted screenwriter V. Vijayendra Prasad, who is known for blockbusters like Baahubali, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and RRR. It is now being revised to create a high-voltage cop action drama that carries the same mass appeal as Rowdy Rathore, but without being tied to the franchise. Superstar Akshay Kumar will not feature in this flick; instead, a new, young actor will be signed for this. Now, that’s definitely a bad news for Akshay Kumar fans.

In another exciting update, Tamil filmmaker P.S. Mithran, best known for his work on films like Irumbu Thirai and Hero, has come on board to direct this project. If all goes as planned, the film is expected to go on floors early next year.
