Allergists suggest alternate medications to Benadryl

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – A lot of people grew up being told that Benadryl is a good medicine to take for allergies, but doctors are now saying the side effects could outweigh the benefits.

This medication typically causes people to feel drowsy, sleepy and to experience psychomotor impairment. In children, it can cause sedation, but there have been cases of children experiencing agitation and hallucinations after taking it.

Instead, doctors recommend other kinds of antihistamines.

“We have a lot of newer generation antihistamines that are also readily available over the counter, such as the common one cetirizine, or most people know it as Zyrtec, and the other one is loratadine, commonly known as Claritin, and there’s another one called fexofenadine, also commonly known as Allegra,” said Allergist Dr. Karanthi Nomula.

Benadryl has been used since 1946.
