Nagpur: The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has written to the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), urging it to withdraw its recent notification permitting the registration of Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology (CCMP) -qualified homeopaths with the council. The move permits CCMP-qualified homeopaths to practice allopathy, and this faced opposition from MBBS doctors.In its letter dated September 12, FAIMA expressed concern that equating CCMP-trained doctors with MBBS graduates could dilute the standards of modern medicine and create ambiguity in the minds of patients.“MBBS training involves years of structured education, clinical exposure, and supervised practice. Allowing parallel registration may unintentionally create confusion and affect patient trust,” FAIMA stated.The association highlighted four key reasons for its opposition: Preservation of modern medicine standards, uniformity with National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, clarity in professional roles, and safeguarding public trust in the healthcare system. FAIMA stressed that while CCMP training has its role in healthcare delivery, it should not be equated with MBBS qualifications. “People associate MMC registration with full-fledged doctors trained in modern medicine. Any dilution of this perception may impact patient confidence,” the letter noted.Signed by FAIMA’s national chairman Dr Manish Jangra, national president Dr Akshay Dongadwe, vice-president Dr Divyansh Singh, and general secretary Dr Ramandeep Singh, the appeal urged MMC to act “in the larger interest of both the medical fraternity and public health.”MMC president Dr Vinky Rughwani told TOI that the council is acting on directions from the state’s medical education department. “The decision was taken based on legal opinions from the advocate general and the law and judiciary department. We will begin registrations from September 17,” he said.Dr Rughwani added that while the registration empowers homeopaths to practise allopathy, the MMC will frame a standard operating procedure (SOP) to define the limits of this practice. “The council will ensure that homeopaths are never placed on par with MBBS doctors in terms of allopathy practice,” he emphasised.
