Thinking about raising your grill game? We’ve got you covered.

At Consumer Reports, our engineers have been testing new grills for weeks, using our indoor lab outfitted with commercial-grade exhaust hoods and fire-suppression systems. This allows us to start even when there’s snow on the ground. That way, we can report on the newest models before Memorial Day, the unofficial start of the summer grilling season. (Check back throughout the spring for the newest top-scoring models.)

Below, we highlight the very best gas grills from our tests in small, medium, and large sizes. The grills featured here are among the finest options in our gas grill ratings, a mix of all-around top performers and competitively priced grills that earn high scores in our labs.

If you’re unsure which size you need or which features matter, or even whether a gas grill is right for you, start with our grill buying guide. CR members can also jump right into our full gas grill ratings to compare more options.

If you’re looking to expand your grilling horizons this year or you’re considering using more than one grill, check out our ratings for charcoal grills, kamado grills, pellet grills, and portable grills.

Best Small Gas Grills

We categorize gas grills by the number of burger patties they can accommodate. Small gas grills can typically hold 18 or fewer patties at once, making them a good pick for small cookouts.

Weber Spirit E-210 46110001

With just two burners, the Weber Spirit E-210 is a spiffy, well-polished grill in a small package. While it’s a bit slow to heat up, it earns a solid rating for heating evenness, our most crucial performance test, plus strong marks for convenience and indirect cooking. As a brand, Weber is near the front of the pack when it comes to owner satisfaction and predicted reliability for its gas grills in CR’s member surveys, with outstanding ratings for each. This is the model to beat if you want solid all-around performance in a small gas grill.

Napoleon Freestyle 365 F365DPGT

The three-burner Napoleon Freestyle 365 F365DPGT delivers strong all-around performance. This small gas grill earns top-level scores for indirect cooking as well as sturdiness. Its temperature range and quick ability to preheat are impressive as well. It receives only a middling mark for its ability to heat evenly, though, which is a pain if you’re making a bunch of burgers and want them all to finish at the same time. Napoleon, as a brand, received ace ratings for reliability and owner satisfaction for its gas grills in CR’s latest member surveys. Overall, it’s slightly sturdier than the Weber and quicker to heat, but you sacrifice some evenness across the cooking surface.

Permasteel PG-40301-BK

The compact, low-priced Permasteel PG-40301-BK is a solid choice overall. It gets strong results in all of our crucial performance tests, including an impressive rating for preheating. It has three burners, an electronic ignition, coated cast-iron cooking grates, and two side shelves. But we don’t have enough survey data yet to rate Permasteel’s gas grills for owner satisfaction and reliability. Of the small models here, it’s the fastest to heat, but it really stands out as the model to snag if you’re looking for a deal. It’s about $100 less than either the Weber or the Napoleon.

Best Midsized Gas Grills

Midsized gas grills in our ratings are able to accommodate 18 to 28 burger patties. This is the most widely sold grill size. You’ll find some basic grills with few features as well as souped-up models with plenty of storage.

Weber Genesis Smart Grill EPX-335 35810001

At the top of our midsized gas grill ratings is the Weber Genesis Smart Grill EPX-335. Except for a middling score for preheating, it delivers impressive performance in our tests, including strong marks for heating evenness and temperature range. This grill is also packed with features. It offers three main burners, a side burner, a pizza insert, and a built-in probe that, when used with the grill’s smart capabilities, lets you monitor the internal temperature of whatever you’re cooking on your smartphone without opening the lid. Weber gas grills earned excellent owner satisfaction and predicted reliability ratings in CR’s member surveys. Overall, it’s the model for those who want to cook anything, from ribs to rotisserie chicken—and are willing to pay a hefty premium for that kind of versatility.

Weber Genesis S-325s 35300001

The Weber Genesis E-325s is a handsome midsized grill with strong performance. This three-burner model heats evenly and offers a wide temperature range. One caveat: It’s a bit slow to heat up, so you’ll want to factor in additional time for a longer preheat when you cook. Weber has a terrific reputation; its gas grills earned top marks for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction in our member surveys. This model is the Weber to get if you want to save quite a bit of money by giving up on spiffy features.

Even Embers GAS8560AS

The stainless midsized Even Embers GAS8560AS offers great bang for your buck. It has five main burners with a 10-year warranty, a side burner, and a built-in bottle opener. And even at a lower price, performance isn’t compromised. It earns top-level marks for distributing heat evenly and for heating up fast. In our member surveys, Even Embers gas grills received respectable predicted reliability and middling owner satisfaction ratings. It’s the logical choice if you’re looking for a solid deal on a midsized grill and can do without fancy features.

Best Large Gas Grills

In our categorization, large gas grills hold 28 or more burger patties at once. These heavyweights are ideal for big cookouts and family gatherings.

Weber Summit E-670

If you’re looking for a large premium grill, the Weber Summit E-670 has every bell and whistle, along with top-notch performance—but it’s pricey. It has six main burners, a side burner, a built-in fuel gauge, a smoker box, and even a rotisserie. It heats quickly and evenly, and cooks at an exceptionally broad range of temperatures. In fact, with an excellent rating in our temperature-range test, it’s well-suited for grilling just about anything you can dream up. Weber gas grills earned top marks in both owner satisfaction and predicted reliability in CR’s member surveys.

Monument Grills Denali D605

The Monument Grills Denali D605 earns top marks for preheating and indirect cooking, and it also offers solid performance in other tests, including cooking evenness and temperature range. It comes with six main burners, an electronic ignition, a side burner, a digital temperature display, and four casters to make it easier to move around. In our member surveys, Monument gas grills garnered stellar predicted reliability and owner satisfaction ratings. One difference to note: While most of our top-rated gas grills have side shelves made out of stainless steel, this Monument model has plastic side shelves.

Even Embers GAS2660AS (Tractor Supply)

The six-burner Even Embers GAS2660AS is a large gas grill that stands out in every measure of grill performance: fast preheat times, a wide range of high and low temperatures, effective indirect cooking, and even heat over the entire surface. It’s exclusive to Tractor Supply. In addition to its strong performance, it offers a side burner and plenty of stainless steel instead of cheaper coated metal, unusual for a large grill in this price range. It’s also the only model in this roundup with a clear glass viewing window in the hood, so you can see whether food is ready to flip without letting the heat escape by opening the lid. As a brand, Even Embers gas grills earned a strong predicted reliability rating from our member surveys and a middling owner satisfaction rating.

How CR Tests Gas Grills

In our lab, we wire the surface of each gas grill with heat-resistant thermocouples and do four temperature tests. We also assess how evenly each model heats. That’s an important attribute when grilling for a crowd. All your food, no matter where you throw it on the grates, should finish at the same time.

“Just like your oven, a grill needs to preheat,” says Breann Chai, who oversees gas grill testing at CR. “A preheated grill cooks more evenly, and it can also help prevent food from sticking.” We measure how hot the surface gets at the 10-minute mark because that’s when our data says most folks like to start cooking.

We also gauge how reliable gas grill brands are by surveying thousands of CR members about their own gas grills. In our latest polls, we asked CR members about their experiences with tens of thousands of gas grills, and we used that data to determine the most and least reliable gas grill brands. Lastly, we score grill makers at the brand level for both reliability and owner satisfaction, and we factor those scores into our grill ratings.
