Sapan Verma Interview:
Sapan Verma is unarguably one of the most popular comedians in India. It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say that he’s also one of the most successful stand-up comedians in today’s day and age. He recently got the opportunity to host the Indian Film Festival Of Melbourne (IFFM) Award Night 2025. During an exclusive interview for movie Talkies, Sapan Verma gave his thoughts on comedians making offensive jokes. It is to be noted that over the years, several comedians have been criticized and called out for making vulgar and controversial jokes.

“I think you have to do smart writing so that you can say what you want and also get away with it. So I think that’s where a skill of a comedian comes in place…..That you can say whatever you want, and you can conceal it in a smart way. Be subversive about your art, say whatever you want without getting into trouble. I think that’s where the craft comes into place,” said Sapan Varma about comedians making offensive jokes.
Post which, he also drew light on the lack of good comedy films in Bollywood of late. Sapan spoke about how he and Vir Das are trying their best to write some good comedy films. He felt that there have been a lot of action, crime, and thriller films in the recent past and thus, some comedy is needed right now.
“I fully agree with you (on not getting too many good comedy films of late). I hope comedy films make a comeback. I am trying, Vir is here, Vir is trying to make comedy films, I’m trying to write a couple of comedy films. We all want something nice like right now everything is all action, crime, thriller. I think some comedy is needed. So I hope comedy comes back fast,” he continued.
Further on, when asked about his message for the budding comedians, Sapan said “Watch a lot of stand-up, get on stage, that’s it. Just practice, practice, practice, that’s it!”
