Doctors warn against using common allergy medication that is ‘outdated and dangerous’

UNDATED (CNN Newsource/WKRC) – In a review published earlier this year, allergy experts from two universities described an allergy medication as “outdated and dangerous.”

Some doctors were advising against the use of the allergy drug diphenhydramine, commonly known by the brand name Benadryl, citing concerns over its safety and efficacy.

The experts recommended considering safer alternatives available on the market, such as Claritin and Allegra. They also suggested that, at a minimum, Benadryl should be moved behind the pharmacy counter.

The review highlighted that Benadryl and other drugs containing the same active ingredient can lead to sedation, cognitive impairment, and, in some cases, dangerous cardiac effects.

In response, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association provided a statement on behalf of Benadryl’s manufacturer, Kenvue. The statement said responsible use is essential and emphasized that consumers should always follow the directions and warnings on the label.
