“Health Literacy Month is an opportunity to examine how medical professionals can make complex information more accessible to patients and families. At St. Jude, health literacy is a priority. Making information accessible to patients and families to keep them better informed and improve outcomes is central to our mission.
Teresa Shurley, senior patient educator and co-chair of the International Cancer Education Conference (ICEC) planning committee, said:
‘Our role is to help get information to patients and families in a way that they can understand it and digest it, to make health care more accessible to everyone.’
The Together by St. Jude educational resource delivers information in plain language and is available in 12 languages. Each translation is reviewed for cultural relevance, ensuring that families receive information in a way that is meaningful within their home countries.
St. Jude recently hosted ICEC, drawing 175 attendees from five countries. This event, in collaboration with the American Association of Cancer Educators, focused on innovative strategies to enhance patient education. A significant emphasis was placed on artificial intelligence, including its use to convert low-resolution images into high-resolution ones, thus reducing costs and improving access to early diagnosis.
The conference also showcased advancements in 3D modeling and virtual reality, providing new tools to help families visualize tumor locations and better understand treatment options. These developments reflect the ongoing evolution of communication methods in healthcare.
When patients and families are better informed, they have better outcomes. By sharing our practices and learning from peers, St. Jude continues to refine its approach to health literacy, supporting improved outcomes for patients worldwide. Visit together.stjude.org to learn more.”
