How to disable AI Overviews on Google Search

UPDATED 5/27/2025: Google has officially integrated AI-generated answers (known as AI Overviews) into its search results. While there’s no official way to turn this feature off completely, you can apply a simple workaround to minimize or bypass these results in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and other browsers on Windows 11, Windows 10, and other platforms (where supported).

As part of its broader rollout of generative AI across products, Google has introduced a new “Web” filter that displays only traditional search results. When you select this option, you’ll get a clean page with standard blue links to websites and videos, without AI-generated summaries.

However, there’s a catch: You can’t set this “Web” view as the default page in the browser. Instead, you must click the “Web” filter manually each time, and it’s hidden under the “More” menu, which adds friction to the experience.

But here’s the good news: You can use a workaround to either make this filter your default or, at the very least, streamline access to it, restoring a more classic search experience with just links, no AI.

If you’ve noticed that AI Overviews sometimes deliver inaccurate or overgeneralized answers, or you simply prefer the familiar list of clickable results, this method gives you back control.

In this guide, I will teach you the steps to disable the AI search results on Google using Chrome and Edge.

Important: While you can still access a more traditional search experience, you have to understand that Google no longer offers traditional results. The entire search system has switched to an AI-based experience, so when you’re in Google, everything is handled by AI.

Turn off AI Overviews on Google Search from Chrome

To disable the AI Overviews on Google from Chrome, use these steps:

1. Open Google Chrome.

2. Click on Customize and Control Google Chrome (three dots) menu.

3. Choose the Settings option.

4. Click on Search engine.

5. Click the “Manage search engines and site search” page.

6. Click the Add button under the “Site search” section.

7. In the Name setting, confirm a name for the item, such as “Google Web,” “Google Results,” etc.

8. In the Shortcut setting, enter the https://google.com domain.

9. In the URL setting, enter the {google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s query.

   

10. Click the Add button.

11. Click the three-dot button to open the newly created Site search menu.

12. Choose the Make default option.

    

13. (Optional) Click on Appearance.

14. Turn on the “Show home button” toggle switch to make the Home button available in Chrome.

    

Once you complete the steps, you will be able to access an experience without AI Overviews when performing a search query from the address bar or from the Google search box on a new tab. The page results will now show only blue links, and the results will remove AI results as well as images, videos, and other forms of results. However, in the case of videos, you will continue to see results, but as blue links.

Turn off AI Overviews on Google Search from Edge

To disable the AI answers on Google results from Microsoft Edge, use these steps:

1. Open Microsoft Edge.

2. Click on Settings and more (three dots) menu.

3. Choose the Settings option.

4. Click on Privacy, search, and services.

5. Click the “Search and connected experiences” setting on the right side.

   

6. Click the “Address bar and search” button at the bottom of the page.

   

7. Click the “Manage search engines” setting.

   

8. Click the Add button in the top-right corner.

9. Confirm a name for the item (such as “Google Search” or “Google Results”) in the “Search engine” setting.

10. Enter the https://google.com domain in the “Shortcut” setting.

11. Enter the {google:baseURL}/search?udm=14&q=%s query in the “URL” setting.

    

12. Click the Add button.

13. Click the three-dot button to open the newly created Site search menu.

14. Choose the Make default option.

After you complete the steps, Google’s AI Overviews in search results will no longer be available when performing a search from the address bar. If you open the “Google.com” website, you will access the generative AI answers. As a result, you have to use the address bar to search with blue links only unless you
