How-To Geek Celebrates Our Planet

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to celebrate our planet and raise awareness of how we can protect the environment—an issue that grows in importance as every second passes.

At How-To Geek, we’re honoring the Earth over the whole week, from April 21 to 27. Here’s what you can expect, or head straight to our Earth Day 2025 hub to dive in.

What Is Earth Day?

Earth Day began in 1970 in the United States. It was created by Gaylord Nelson, a senator from Wisconsin, and a young activist called Denis Hayes. They were concerned about pollution and wanted to make the public aware of the impact of environmental damage.

Working with groups across the country, and expanding beyond its initial student audience, the event was branded Earth Day. According to the organizers, it led to 20 million people being involved.

Earth Day went global in 1990 and has moved billions of people to think about their connection to our changing planet, and to campaign for and influence change.
