Marvel Studios has once again made its larger-than-life presence felt on the Hollywood landscape. The legendary Marvel Cinematic Universe has returned to silver screens all over the world to unveil its 37th film to audiences. The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives after much anticipation and it’s already making great impressions on moviegoers; that’s including critics, as the film has an extremely good 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Yep, F4 is fresh.
Off the back of the success of Thunderbolts* (which many termed one of the best Marvel movies ever made), audiences were intrigued to see if Marvel’s First Family could continue that momentum as some of the Multiverse Saga’s outings have been inconsistent. Thankfully, that’s exactly what they did, setting the stage for the big Avengers reunion that is on the horizon.
That being said, if you were hoping that Marvel would get the chance to entertain us on the big screen again, there is some less-than-stellar news.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day doesn’t come out until next summer
The next cinematic release from Marvel Studios doesn’t come out until next summer. That’s right, Marvel’s long-running collaboration with Sony Pictures will continue as the studios will bring us Spider-Man: Brand New Day next year, which arrives in movies theaters on July 31, 2026.
Yep, that’s a whole year away and it’s one of the longest-planned gaps between MCU movies in history. In fact, it’s second behind the near-two-year wait between 2008’s The Incredible Hulk and 2010’s Iron Man 2. If you count the unexpectedly long gap between 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home and 2021’s Black Widow (which was constantly delayed due to the pandemic), then it’s third. Even so, it’s somewhat unexpected.
The next movie in the MCU franchise was supposed to be Avengers: Doomsday (which had an initial release date of May 1, 2026) but it has since been delayed until December 18 of next year instead. This decision was made to allow Marvel more time to make the movie so that there can be no fears of the finished product coming off as rushed. After all, an Avengers movie requires round-the-clock care – especially this one considering the success of the Multiverse Saga is riding on it.
Spider-Man 4‘s release date was always set for next summer (although it was delayed one week to its current opening date) but it was originally planned to come out after Avengers: Doomsday. At some point during production of the latter movie, Marvel Studios made the decision to move its release date to after Spidey’s next webslinging adventure – which, honestly, lines up with the rumors that both movies will take place at the same time. If that is the case, it’s easy to see how they could both be interchangeable in the release timeline.
Of course, a long wait between movies is a good way to build up anticipation. We’ve had three major MCU movies in the space of six months this year, so it’s probably a good idea to allow fans to miss the franchise a little bit before its major return next year. Both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday are set to be pivotal chapters in the Multiverse Saga (and Phase Six), so it’s already clear that 2026 will be a big year for the MCU; making us wait for those undoubtedly game-changing chapters sets it up for an even better chance to success.
In the meantime, you can still get your fill of the MCU on the small screen. On the live-action front, Disney Plus show Wonder Man premieres this December while Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is expected next March. And over on the animated side of things we have Eyes of Wakanda on August 1 and Marvel Zombies! on October 3.
