“I’m Gonna Be a Dad”: How Ellie Embraces Dina’s Pregnancy in The Last of Us Season 2

Ellie has departed Jackson Town on her vengeful journey in The Last of Us Season 2. Currently, she is in Seattle, tracking down Abby and her WLF members. During the journey, Dina has been slowly falling sick, showing signs of pregnancy in the previous episode. Now, in Season 2 Episode 4, when Ellie reveals the truth that she is immune to the Cordyceps fungus, Dina also breaks the silence about her pregnancy that she just discovered while raiding an abandoned pharmacy. While the reality stays the same, Ellie processes and deals with the unexpected news in the TV series a little differently compared to the video game.

In the TLOU TV series, Dina confirms that she is pregnant with Jesse’s baby with multiple pregnancy test kits she found in an abandoned pharmacy. After Dina shares the future she imagines them having together, Ellie gives her thoughts about the pregnancy. To every gamer’s surprise, Ellie embraces Dina’s pregnancy cheerfully saying, “We are having a baby.”

In the video game, Ellie does take care of Jesse’s baby, JJ, when the couple moves to a farm in the epilogue of the game. However, the protagonist from the TLOU Part 2 video game reacted to Dina’s pregnancy news differently from the TV show. She didn’t take the news lightly, and it was clear that she was upset after hearing the news from Dina.

What? What are we supposed to do now? Are you fu**ing kidding me…

The pair had a heated conversation in the game as Ellie was hellbent on accomplishing her revenge against Abby and didn’t want to be held back by anyone, including her partner, Dina.

Dina: I didn’t want to be a burden

Ellie: Well, you are a burden now, aren’t you?

It was interesting to see the creators alter the emotion and atmosphere of an important revelation in the TV series. While I was happy to see Ellie celebrate Dina’s pregnancy, I still prefer the events that played out in the game, as their relationship drama feels natural to the revenge-fueled story of the sequel.
