The problem has to do with a faulty part called a power transfer unit (PTU). A manufacturing error means the transmission could suddenly disengage. Drivers may notice a “Service 4WD” message on the dashboard and/or additional noise, vibration, and changes in how the vehicle drives.
The automaker says it is still working on a solution for the problem. As with all recalls, repairs will be free of charge at dealerships. In 2020, Jeep recalled some older Cherokee models for a similar issue.
Jeep is aware of over 1,100 reports of failures related to this issue, none of which have involved crashes or injuries, according to documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
