Madelia Health is opening a new clinic in New Ulm in the Gislason & Hunter building at 2700 S. Broadway. The new clinic is expected to open in October.

NEW ULM – This fall, medical services in New Ulm will be expanding. Madelia Health announced it will be opening a new clinic in New Ulm.

The new Madelia Health clinic will be located at 2700 S. Broadway in the same building as Gislason & Hunter law office.

Madelia Health CEO and president David Walz said the goal is to have the clinic open by Oct. 1 with a primary care provider in the office Monday through Friday.

Walz said Madelia Health was not initially looking to open a clinic in New Ulm, but for years they had heard feedback from patients and community members requesting a clinic in New Ulm. Then the owner of the building at 2700 S. Broadway contacted Walz about available space for a clinic. The law office was only using two-thirds of the building. The remaining third offered 6,000 square feet of space for a clinic. Walz said after he and staff toured the space the realized it would fit their needs.

Madelia Health began in Madelia around 100 years ago with Dr. W.J. McCarthy, who converted a residence into a private hospital with 12 beds.

David Walz, the president of Madelia Health visited New Ulm to announce the addition of a new clinic in the town. Madelia Health is an independent rural health provider based out of Madelia and has clinics in Lake Crystal, Truman and St. James.

After 35 years, the village of Madelia purchased the hospital and operated it as a municipal hospital until 1954. In 1953, construction began on a new 22-bed hospital on Drew Street. The hospital has remained at this location ever since. There have been renovations and expansions to the hospital, in addition to other affiliated clinics opening in Lake Crystal, Truman, St. James and now New Ulm.

The New Ulm clinic will be open Monday through Friday and will be staffed with a nurse practitioner. The clinic will be able to provide all wellness exams. There is even room for specialists to visit the clinic a few days a month. This includes a podiatrist, dermatologist, optometrist and others.

The clinic will take appointments but will have slotted time for walk-in visits. Walz said they would provide a form of urgent care, but in a clinic setting.

The clinic will be staffed by Nurse Practitioners Cameron Ryer and Lacey Groebner with a third possible practitioner coming on later

Renovation is ongoing at the clinic site with former law offices being retrofitted for medical use. Walz was confident the work would be completed by October. The last requirement is the insurance survey and obtaining a medicare provider number for the clinic.

Walz said the mantra for Madelia Health is: “let our family take care or yours.”

“Our purpose is to provide family healthcare,” Walz said. “We have family nurse practitioners and family providers that do the majority of the work.”

The hope is the new clinic will provide greater access to medical care for New Ulm patients.
