Man leaves rabid raccoon at Frederick County, Md. vet, health officials seek his identity

Health officials in Frederick County, Maryland, hope to find a man who dropped off a raccoon with rabies to a veterinarian clinic on at around midnight on Monday, fearing his health could be impacted, according to county officials.

The man, believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s, gave the raccoon to the staff at the 24/7 Care Veterinarian Clinic before leaving without giving officials his information. The raccoon was wrapped in a fleece jacket at the time it was handed off to vet staff, according to the Frederick County Health Department.

But officials believe the man could be at risk for also contracting the disease, which is commonly spread via saliva from infected animals or transmitted though a bite, accordingto the Mayo Clinic and the Maryland state health website.

Humans who contract the disease, according to the Mayo Clinic, are highly likely to die from it (see a list of symptoms here).

The man was described as having curly brown hair and no facial hair. He wore a dark blue sweatshirt that may have been plaid and dark colored shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Frederick County officials at 240-315-9515 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or 301-600-0312 after hours.
