New on Netflix this week: Top picks
‘Finding Her Edge’
Watch On
“Finding Her Edge” stars Madelyn Keys as elite figure skater Adriana Russo. Based on the YA novel of the same name, this show centers around a bit of a love triangle. Adriana is training with a new partner, Brayden Elliott (Cale Ambrozic), and he could be her ticket to the Olympics. But she’s still trying to get over her old partner, Freddie (O’Connell).
Look, it’s not “Heated Rivalry,” but there’s romance and ice. If you’re one to like a teen romance drama series — of which Netflix has plenty — then this show is right up your alley.
Watch “Finding Her Edge” on Netflix starting Jan. 22
‘Star Search’ (Netflix live event)
Watch On
Before there was “American Idol” or “The X Factor,” there was Star Search. This 1980s-90s competition show to find the next great talents was iconic, but aside from an ill-fated 2003 reboot, it’s been dormant.
But this week it’s back, and it’s live on Netflix. Hosted by Anthony Anderson, judges Jelly Roll, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Chrissy Teigen will suss out which musicians, dancers, comedians, juniors, and variety acts could be the next big stars. In a twist, Netflix viewers will also get to vote on the performers and determine in real time who advances and who goes home.
Watch “Star Search” live on Netflix every Tuesday and Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET starting Jan. 20
‘Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart’
Watch On
Elizabeth Smart was just your normal 14-year-old girl. But on the morning of June 5, 2002, her parents discovered that she had been abducted from the room she and her sister, Mary Katherine, shared.
Here’s the good news: Elizabeth is alive. She was found nine months later, and her kidnappers were brought to justice. But her tale is a harrowing one, and “Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart” has her telling the story in her own words. If you’re a true crime fan, this documentary is one to watch.
Watch on “Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart on Netflix starting Jan. 21
‘The Big Fake’
Watch On
Toni Chichiarelli (Pietro Castellitto) wants nothing more than to be a great artist. But while he has the skills, destiny has other plans for him. Upon his arrival in Rome, he quickly finds himself mixed in with politicians and criminals rather than fellow artists.
In “The Big Fake,” Toni does start to climb the ladder of the art world, but only because he’s willing to do some dangerous work for some dangerous men. This movie is for anyone who loves a good crime drama.
Watch “The Big Fake” on Netflix starting Jan. 23
‘Skyscraper Live’ (Netflix live event)
Watch On
“Skyscraper Live” will be a first for Netflix. No matter what, it’ll be the first time anyone has attempted to free solo — climbing without ropes or a harness — one of the world’s tallest buildings live on Netflix.
But this has the chance to be something more. If Alex Honnold, one of the best climbers in the world, succeeds, he’ll be the first person to free solo one of Earth’s tallest buildings. If he fails, he could be the first person to die live on Netflix. Maybe don’t let the kids watch this one till it’s over.
Watch “Skyscraper” live on Netflix starting at 8 p.m. ET on Jan. 23
‘Monday Night Raw: 2026’ (Netflix live event)
Watch On
“WWE Raw” is one of the wrestling empire’s two weekly shows. Every Monday, fans of spandex and suplex alike tune in to watch wrestling’s biggest stars face off against each other in the ring. There’s drama, trash talking, shocking moments and knock-down drag-out fights. In short, it’s a wrestling fan’s dream and better than any soap opera you’re watching
Last week, “Raw” went international, taking place in Düsseldorf, Germany. This week, the world tour continues, with the show taking place in Belfast, Northern Ireland. So if you’re used to an 8 p.m. ET start time, maybe set an alarm for this one.
