New on HBO Max in January 2026: All the new shows and movies to watch
New year, new shows and movies. January 2026 at HBO Max is starting strong with more medical drama stress, fantastical Westeros storytelling, and a true-life sports story, making for a tantalizing mix of content you won’t want to miss.
First up is the return of “The Pitt” for season 2, which drops audiences back into a Pittsburgh trauma center as doctors and nurses face another lengthy, pulse-pounding day of medical cases. Then, fantasy fans can head back to Westeros with “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” a more intimate, character-driven tale set long before “Game of Thrones” that follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire Egg.

‘The Pitt’ season 2
Season 2 of “The Pitt” picks up roughly 10 months after the first season’s intense 15-hour emergency room shift. This time, the drama unfolds over a Fourth of July weekend at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, where the doctors and nurses, including Noah Wyle’s Dr. Robby, are again tested by a flood of critical cases and personal challenges as they do their best to keep patients alive.

‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’
Set roughly a century before the events of “Game of Thrones”, this spinoff harkens back to a time when the Targaryens still sit on the Iron Throne. It follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg as they travel the realm together. They move from tournaments to taverns in this everyday adventure epic, admittedly smaller in scale than “Game of Thrones” and seek a purpose beyond the simple knightly exploits you’d expect.

‘The Smashing Machine’
This biopic explores the history of mixed martial arts legend Mark Kerr. Dwayne Johnson stars as Kerr, chronicling his rise from amateur wrestler to one of the most dominant early fighters in the UFC and PRIDE. It also focuses on Kerr’s peak years in the late 1990s and early 2000s, following his success in the ring and the personal battles he faced with substance abuse, relationships (with then-girlfriend Emily Blunt), and the physical and emotional toll the sport took on him.
