As the spooky season approaches, the streamers are slowly and steadily adding more and more apt titles in their library. Among them is Netflix, which has recently added the most iconic slasher movie that still gives fans nightmares, some fifty years after its release. The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, directed by Tobe Hooper, is now available on Netflix.
While Hooper made quite a controversial film back in the day owing to its gore, violence, and a bewildering storyline though the audience appreciated it. The movie singlehandedly changed the slasher sub-genre with the ideas of a final girl, the use of power tools as murder weapons, and made Leatherface a household name and a horror icon for ages. Unarguably, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is the most influential film that still inspires filmmakers around the world. The movie follows a group of young adults who encounter a house full of demented butchers who chase them with chainsaws. The movie’s success was followed by a couple of sequels, with the last movie debuting on Netflix in 2022 that circles back to the original story; however, none proved as influential as the original movie.
Is There a New ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Film with Glen Powell?
Given Hollywood likes to rehash the ideas that worked well in the past with prequels and sequels, there has been a long-standing rumor about a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie hailing from A24 with Strange Darling scribe and helmer, JT Mollner, and starring fan favorite leading man Glen Powell. However, Mollner put a stop to those rumors by previously revealing, “Glen [Powell] is a tremendous actor and one of the first real movie stars to come along in a long time. I was lucky enough somebody exposed him to Strange Darling and we got to take a meeting and he was really excited about it. And I was excited about his work. And so I do know him and I met him, and it was a really cool meeting, and I’d love to do something with him at some point. But those rumors about TCM were strange. I didn’t know quite where they came from.” Though Mollner’s long time partner Roy Lee added, “Well, there is some validity to it and we’re still in discussions, but nothing that’s concrete just yet.”
So while we wait for any news on the revival of the iconic film, check out the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned to Collider for more such updates.
