Constable Kanakam, an ETV Win series, grabbed eyeballs when its team accused a popular streaming platform of allegedly plagiarising their content. Director Prasanth Kumar Dimmala claimed that he first approached the other digital platform, which allegedly used his content without his approval.

From the beginning, Constable Kanakam’s team promoted the series with the tagline “ORIGINALLY MADE,” seen as an indirect jab at the rival camp. This controversy has indeed caught the attention of the audience, and now the show is up for streaming. Let’s see how it is.

Story:

The series is set in Repalle, Srikakulam, during the 1990s. The village has a mysterious place called Adavi Gutta. Women who enter this deadly place go missing. Hence, the villagers collectively decide to restrict anyone from going there. Kanaka Mahalakshmi, a.k.a. Kanakam (Varsha Bollamma), is posted as a constable in Repalle.

One day, Kanakam’s friend Chandrika (Megha Lekha) goes missing, and Kanakam is partly responsible for it. What actually happened to Chandrika? Where did the missing women go? Why are they disappearing? And did Kanakam manage to solve the mystery? That’s what the series is all about.

Plus Points:

Varsha Bollamma’s role and the way she performed are the best part of the show. Kanakam is so timid that even the sight of a lizard makes her nervous. She often gets ridiculed by her colleagues and superiors at workplace. Kanakam’s friend, keeps suggesting her to leave her nervousness behind and believe in herself if she truly wants to make it big in life. When the moment finally arrives, Kanakam overcomes her fears and goes all out. This transformation is likely to strike a chord with female audiences.

Since the series is set in the 1990s, the director also touches upon the gender discrimination that existed back then. Even though the sequence highlighting this issue doesn’t quite hit the mark, the intention is applaudable. The series starts and ends on a good note. The character establishments and Story setup are neatly done.

The bond between Kanakam and her friend Chandrika is nicely showcased, giving the emotional touch required for the series. The villain’s character is a bit peculiar, and this goes in favor of the show. The motive behind the killings and the way he/she carried out the crimes is depicted in an interesting manner in the final episode.Rajeev Kanakala, Srinivas Avasarala, Ramana Bhargav, and Prem Sagar are pretty good in their roles.

Minus Points:

Lately, OTT platforms have been flooded with thrillers, and this makes it must for new content to be highly captivating to stand out from the rest. However, Constable Kanakam uses the tropes and cliches of a mystery thriller making it less unique.

But that’s not the main problem. The series lacks intriguing investigation and thrills that one usually expects from a thriller. The plotline in Constable Kanakam is something that we have witnessed in multiple films and shows before. Hence, the proceedings needed to be highly gripping to hold the audience’s attention. This is where Constable Kanakam falters.

It is not that the show is outright bad, but at the same time there aren’t any wow moments. While the character introductions and plot setup are neatly done, once the protagonist’s friend goes missing, the expected tension is missing in the proceedings. When the narrative shifts to Delhi, pacing dips suddenly. The CGI used during a crucial revelation could have been executed better.

Technical Aspects:

Constable Kanakam is undoubtedly one of the well-made shows technically in the Telugu digital space. Suresh Bobbili’s background score adds more value to this crime thriller. Even when the writing doesn’t support, Suresh Bobbili’s score elevates the scenes with his commendable work.

Sriram Mukkapati’s cinematography is terrific, and so is Vishnu Vardhan Pulla’s production design. The editing is fine for the most part. The show has six episodes with a runtime of about 180 minutes and doesn’t bore much. Director Prasanth Kumar Dimmala did an okayish job. Had he presented the investigation in a better manner, the show would have been more engaging.

Verdict:

On the whole, Constable Kanakam is a crime thriller that has its share of moments. The storyline isn’t new and also there isn’t anything groundbreaking in the screenplay. However the characterizations of Varsha Bollamma and the antagonist, the performances of the lead cast, and the good technical aspects make this series an okay watch.
