Sidharth Malhotra and Janhvi Kapoor’s rom-com entertainer Param Sundari attracted movie buffs with its enchanting music. Especially the Paradesiya track struck a chord with musicophiles. The film is now out in theatres, and let’s see how it is.

Story:

Param (Sidharth Malhotra) is the son of an affluent businessman (Sanjay Kapoor). Aspiring to become a successful entrepreneur, Param establishes several start-ups but fails to thrive the way his father did. One day, he is advised to invest in a dating app called ‘Find My Soulmate.’

However, Param’s father refuses to fund the project. Determined to prove its worth, Param decides to try the app himself. The app suggests that Sundari Damodharan Pillai (Janhvi Kapoor), hailing from Nangiarkulangara, Kerala, is his perfect match. The rest of the film follows Param’s efforts to win Sundari’s heart.

Plus Points:

For those who have been missing the vintage magic of Bollywood music, Param Sundari is the perfect answer. The soundtrack composed by Sachin-Jigar wins hearts right from the first scene. Every song is pleasant to listen to, and the picturesque Kerala visuals take the impact to the next level. The Paradesiya song, which is the best of the lot, is a feast on the big screens.

The first half is engaging, and the euphonious soundtrack drives the proceedings here to a large extent. We get that ‘been there, seen that’ feeling at times, since the Story draws inspiration from some hit Bollywood films, but the lead pair’s lovely chemistry, great music, and neat comedy keep us invested in the first hour considerably.

Romantic dramas are the forte of Sidharth Malhotra, and the actor brings a magical touch with his charming presence and killer looks. Sidharth makes his performance look effortless. He, along with Janhvi Kapoor, radiates a charm, making their pairing look great. Janhvi is beautiful, and her portrayal as a Malayali woman is decent.

Minus Points:

While Param Sundari has a lovely album quintessential for a rom-com, it doesn’t have the emotional depth required to become a memorable outing. The director kept the proceedings light-hearted, including the emotional portions, and hence, one will leave the hall half-heartedly.

The protagonist reveals the real reason for entering Sundari’s life, which shatters the leading lady’s heart. However, she accepts his love very soon. Since all this unfolds rather quickly towards the end, the emotional depth feels not properly explored, restricting the overall impact. Had the emotions been stronger, Param Sundari could have turned out to be a solid flick.

The graph dips in the second half, and the editing team could have done a better job, as the film feels stretched in the last hour. The portions after the ‘Danger’ song look out of place. There isn’t much scope for the other actors to shine. Also, there is a lot of predictability as the film nears the ending.

Technical Aspects:

The Sachin-Jigar duo deserves all the applause for coming up with a poignant album that tugs at the heartstrings. They made good use of the Paradesiya track in the background score. Cinematographer Santhana Krishnan Ravichandran superbly depicted the beauty of God’s own country. The editing in the first half is fine, but it needed sharpness in the second half.

Tushar Jalota’s direction works in parts. While the first half engages despite the known plot, the latter half doesn’t quite match up. There are a couple of promising moments in the second hour, but ultimately, this part feels underwhelming due to the lack of emotional weight in the narrative.

Verdict:

On the whole, Param Sundari is a simple love Story that shines musically but falters in emotions. Sidharth Malhotra is solid, and Janhvi Kapoor gives a decent portrayal. The film boasts one of the finest albums in recent times, and the lead pair shares good chemistry. However, it falls well short in delivering the magic of Bollywood rom-coms due to the lack of emotional depth. The momentum dips highly in the second half with dragged-out scenes, making the film a below-par outing.
