A new Resident Evil movie is in the works with Barbarian helmer Zach Cregger set to direct. As previous film adaptations have been polarizing, there may be some trepidation with the new film, but Cregger is aiming to satisfy other fans of the games.
Cregger commented on Resident Evil in a new interview with ComicBook. He stressed that he’s a big fan of the video games, particularly Resident Evil 4, which recently had a remake released. Cregger added that his goal with the new film is to tell a story that honors the Resident Evil experience, replicating the same vibe of the source material. He noted that he hasn’t even seen the other Resident Evil movies, so he’s only looking at the classic games for inspiration. This could be seen as very surprising, given how the director is joining the franchise, as well as how big of a fan Cregger is of the IP.

The Penguin Breakout Cristin Milioti Set to Star in Her First Horror Movie
Cristin Milioti is taking on a lead role in a horror film that’s promising to be a “new experience” for genre fans.
“[I’m doing the movie] because I love the games,” the director said. “I played all of the games. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games. I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love… I think the movie is going to rip. I think it’s going to rip.”
I think the movie is going to rip.
While the movie is going to be heavily inspired by the games, fans still should not expect the story to be 100% faithful. In another recent interview with SFX Magazine, Cregger similarly exclaimed how he’s a huge Resident Evil fan, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to take some creative liberties. Even so, the goal is still to capture that unique Resident Evil tone.

“I’m definitely not trying to be completely obedient to the lore of the games; I’m trying to tell a story that just feels authentic to the experience you get when you play the games,” as Cregger said. “I don’t think I’m breaking any major rules, but I also recognize that no matter what I do, people are going to come for me online. So all I want to do is just make a really good movie and tell a story that’s compelling. I know that I’m gonna be happy with the movie, and hopefully other people will, too.”
