Snoop Dogg recalled facing a conundrum while watching Lightyear with his grandson, who at one point asked about the film’s same-sex couple. The rapper said that “threw him for a loop” because he was ill-prepared to have that conversation.
Speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, rapper Snoop Dogg weighed in on one of Lightyear‘s most heartfelt moments. He said he was caught off guard by the film’s lesbian couple scene, especially when his grandson asked him about it. “What you see is what you see, and they’re putting it everywhere,” he said. “They’re like, ‘She had a baby – with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!‘”
He fumbled, trying to explain why one of the film’s protagonists had two mothers. “Oh s***, I didn’t come in for this sh***. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” he recalled thinking. “It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?” Lightyear also caught flak for another scene involving a quick kiss between the same couple. Countries in the Middle East banned the film from theaters because of that.
‘They’re Going to Ask Questions I Don’t Have the Answer’
The rapper called out the film’s LGBTQ+ representation and how he thought children might respond. “[It] f*****- me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies,” he asserted. “Y’all throwing me in the middle of s*** that I don’t have an answer for. These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.” Disney broke new ground with Lightyear by featuring openly LGBTQ+ characters, thanks to an overwhelming petition to ensure their scenes survived the final cut.
Producer Galyn Susman explained why they kept the kissing scene in the film despite heavy backlash. “We’ve always had the lesbian couple. They’ve always been a part of the film. Being able to put back the kiss was important to us. It’s a touching moment,” Susman said in 2022 (per /Film). “It helps Buzz to see what it is that he’s [missing]. It’s the life that’s being lived in front of him by his best friend that he’s not having,” Susman said. “He doesn’t have those kinds of relationships. He doesn’t have a child. He doesn’t have what she has.”
Lightyear star Chris Evans has also clapped back at critics, calling the film’s same-sex scenes inappropriate. “The real truth is those people are idiots,” he told Reuters. “There’s always going to be people who are afraid and unaware and trying to hold on to what was before. But those people die off like dinosaurs. I think the goal is to pay them no mind, march forward and embrace the growth that makes us human.”
