Talking Cars 453: Driving the Subaru Forester

Main theme: In this podcast episode, we share our first impressions of one of the most popular models on ConsumerReports.org, the Subaru Forester. This small SUV has been redesigned for 2025, and we just purchased a Premium model for our test program. 

Now in its sixth generation, the new Forester gets updated styling, highlighted by rather chunky fender flares, a beefier grille, slick headlights, and distinctive rear pillar. But our podcast panel agrees that there’s simply no mistaking it for anything other than a Forester.

We also discuss Subaru’s claim that it has quieted the cabin, addressing a criticism of ours about previous Foresters.

• The newer stop/start tech I see in vehicles today is making me wonder about the long-term reliability of all the components that are restarting each time. Is there actually a benefit in fuel saving long term during idle shutdown to sacrifice the restarts that an engine experiences?

• I’m thinking about buying a used Ford F-150 Lightning EV. CR rates this truck low, but a lot of people I talk to love it. Plus, they’re really cheap used, with very low miles right now. Considering all the problems CR found, am I dumb for still wanting this truck and assuming Ford has fixed its issues by now (or will at least make it easy for buyers to get them fixed)?
