The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion Remastered Announced: Launches Today
The worst-kept secret in gaming has finally been revealed as Bethesda has officially lifted the lid on the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered. Developed by Virtous, the title takes players back to the verdant valleys and shimmering lakes of Cyrodiil, which has received a massive facelift courtesy of Unreal Engine 5. The remaster is available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Game Pass, and PC, and is accessible to players starting now.
The 2006 original is among the most revered RPGs of all time and helped establish Bethesda’s pedigree as a AAA studio. The task of remastering Oblivion fell to Parisian developers Virtous, who have taken an organic approach to modernizing the 360 classic. As stated during the title’s announcement event, the remaster’s pristine visuals are rendered in Unreal Engine 5, but the original Gamebryo Engine still supplies the game logic.
Additionally, all the assets have been redone, with millions of polygons stuffed into individual objects, weapons, and armor pieces. Speaking of weapons, the combat has received some significant upgrades, including blood splatter effects, feedback that depends on the impact site, and new sound cues. Among the biggest new additions is the introduction of a new sprint mechanic, complemented by detailed animations in both first-person and third-person camera perspectives.
The remaster’s reveal event also showed off many familiar settings, including the Oblivion Gates that look hellish in all the right ways, and the resplendent Imperial City, which is shinier than ever. But the devs consistently emphasized that the original’s charm is baked into every inch of the remaster. They drove the point home by displaying the awkward guard interruptions that have been the source of memes for ages. And a brief look at the Adoring Fan, who still looks creepy as hell.
The icing on the cake came via the announcement that Oblivion’s critically acclaimed story expansions, The Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, are packaged alongside the remaster at no additional cost. With that being said, the infamous Horse Armor DLCs are only available in the Deluxe Edition, which costs $60, while the Standard Edition comes in at a more reasonable $50.
