Who Is Lobo in DC: Jason Momoa’s Character in Supergirl Explained
James Gunn’s DCU is at full throttle with the release of Superman’s trailer. However, from this point on, DC seems to be only going up with no intention of looking back. A new revelation has come forward where it has been revealed that Jason Momoa is now going to move over to the DCU as Lobo after playing Aquaman in the DCEU. Now while most fanboys and girls must be familiar with Lobo, if you are not, let me tell you all about the character and the casting of Jason Momoa as Lobo.
Lobo Is an Immortal Bounty Hunter in DC Comics
Making his first appearance in Omega Men #3 in June 1983, Lobo is an extremely unhinged bounty hunter who is ruthless and psychotic. He is undoubtedly one of the coolest characters in DC and has an insane origin story. Lobo belongs to the planet Czarina and when he was born, his evil was so obvious that the nurse who birthed him went insane after he chewed off four of her fingers.
This was the first case of mental illness on this planet in 10 millennia. Lobo was always aware that he was special and his fascination for homicide drove him to create swarms of scorpion-like creatures. He released the creatures on his people effectively killing off every single one of them with him being the last surviving member of his species. After this, he became an intergalactic bounty hunter, and since he is practically immortal, he became the most feared of them all in the entire DC universe.
In the context of Superman and Supergirl, Lobo has not been much of a major antagonist in their cases but has caused both of them a fair share of trouble. Lobo was the one who helped Brainiac capture Superman but also the one who freed Superman from captivity.
Superman has fought Lobo on multiple occasions but they have never had a personal enmity towards each other. However, when we talk about Supergirl, she once killed Lobo temporarily with a single punch when he came to Earth to kill Shay Veritas, a doctor who helped Supergirl on multiple occasions. This moment was a big one in the comic book since Lobo has never been known to die ever since his appearance.
Jason Momoa Will Appear as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Momoa has previously showcased his interest in playing Lobo. He also confirmed in an interview with Fandango that he has been a fan of Lobo since he was just a child. Momoa shared that he used to collect comic books and Lobo was his favorite character and if got the chance, he would play Lobo in the blink of an eye.
“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but he was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role. I mean, listen. If they call and ask me to play him, it’s a fuck yeah. I haven’t received that call, so I don’t want to put any fake news out there, but if they ever call me and ask me to play, or ask me to audition, I’m there.” – Jason Momoa
However, his dream has now come true since James Gunn or DCU has called Jason Momoa and he has been cast as Lobo and is set to appear for the first time in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which will release after Superman. He made this revelation to his fans with an Instagram post where he posted the above-mentioned quote along with the caption “They Called,” confirming his appearance as Lobo. The production of “Supergirl” is set to begin on January 13, 2025, and the movie will release on June 26, 2026.
So, do you guys think Jason Momoa will be able to pull off playing Lobo in live-action? I for one think that he absolutely can and if your opinion differs from mine, let me know in the comments why you think so, and stay tuned with us for further updates!
