Widely-used medicine recalled due to potentially reduced efficacy

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A popular and widely-used medicine was recalled because it may not be as effective as advertised.

The Food and Drug Administration announced on October 10 that 141,984 bottles of generic brand Atorvastatin Calcium tablets were recalled because they may not work as well as intended due to “failed dissolution specifications.”

Atorvastatin Calcium is one of the two “most common, most studied, and most used statins,” according to Dr. Brian Cambi in a statement to Yale Medicine. Statins are pills that can help clear the bloodstream of cholesterol to prevent fatty deposits. Yale Medicine reported that 47 million Americans take a statin daily as of January of 2024.

The specific Atorvastatin Calcium tablets affected by the recall were produced by Alkem Laboratories and distributed by Ascend Laboratories.

Customers who believe they could be affected should go to the FDA’s recall page and see if the pill count, manufacturer, and lot number match their own bottle.

If so, customers should not stop taking the medicine abruptly, but should speak to a doctor about finding an alternative solution for the time being.
