Black Swan — Stream on Hulu
Okay, so this might sound weird, but I have to watch Black Swan every other month or I’ll go crazy. Why? It is hands down my favorite movie of all time. No, seriously. In this 2010 psycho-thriller, Natalie Portman plays Nina, an obsessive ballerina who gives up her entire adult life for her career as a dancer. The only problem is, she loses herself so much in her role as Odette in Swan Lake that her mind is no longer able to separate fact from fiction. They are one in the same for Nina, to the point where she actually becomes the black swan.
Side note: There’s a reason this film was recently ranked by The New York Times as one of the best movies in the 21st century. It’s just that good.

Gone Girl — Stream on Prime Video
I’ll be honest, I thought I was gonna dislike this movie after reading the outstanding book by Gillian Flynn. It’s one of those situations where I was up on my snooty little high horse, thinking, “the book is always better than the movie.” And the truth is, in the case of Gone Girl, the book is better. But still, the film does a fantastic job portraying the chilling character Amy Dunn, played to perfection by Rosamund Pike. Plus, Ben Affleck is brilliant as the seemingly friendly but all-around problematic slob, Nick Dunne.
For those who still haven’t gotten around to the Gone Girl craze of 2014, the story centers around a seemingly picture-perfect couple, with a “cool girl” wife and a goofy husband. But underneath the surface lies a trail of secrets and betrayals that alter the course of their relationship (and lives) for good.

The Shining — Stream on Apple TV+
So you know how I just said that the book is always better? Okay, so let me scratch that statement, because in the case of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the movie is actually far superior to the novel. Sorry, Stephen King! I still love you! The Shining is a cinematic classic, which peeks into the lives of the Torrance family, who are staying inside the haunted Overlook Hotel in snowy Colorado. You’ll be blown away by the phenomenal cinematography, chilling storyline, and heart-thumping thrills. Plus, I’m gonna go ahead and say Shelley Duvall has one of the most captivating on-screen presences I’ve ever seen in a movie. Just an all-around masterpiece!

American Psycho — Stream on Prime Video
I’m one of those annoying people who never shuts up about American Psycho. After reading Bret Easton Ellis’s cynical novel of which the film adapts, I’m constantly asking Were Patrick Bateman’s killings real? Or were they all inside his head? I still don’t know and would love answers, please and thank you!
The movie adaptation features a brilliant performance by Christian Bale, who portrays Patrick Bateman, the embodiment of toxic masculinity in 1980s Wall Street. A bloodthirsty monster disguised in impeccably neat Armani. Who cares about his moral character, so long as his suit looks freshly pressed? What does it matter if he’s downright sinister to the core if his business cards are such a brilliant shade of eggshell white? American Psycho is a satirical critique of the surface-level spirit surrounding capitalist culture. And as much as Patrick would just love to tell you more about it, he first has to return some videotapes…

Promising Young Woman — Stream on Prime Video
Cassie is a seemingly normal 30-year-old who works at a charming Los Angeles cafe, yet the truth is a whole lot darker than it appears on the surface. At night, Cassie (brilliantly portrayed by Carrie Mulligan) goes to seedy clubs alone, pretending to be drunk. She does this with the intent of investigative work, measuring which men will try to take advantage of her before she teaches them a lesson.

Parasite — Stream on HBO Max
There’s a solid reason why The New York Times just ranked Parasite as the number one movie of the 21st century. Like, of all. It’s just that jaw-droppingly incredible. The movie tells the story of a family struggling with poverty, who try to scam their way into an ultra-wealthy household. Unfortunately, nothing goes according to plan.

Fatal Attraction — Stream on Apple TV+
This classic 1980s movie, starring Glenn Close and Michael Douglas, unpacks the perils of obsessive love. What happens when what’s supposed to be a fun and flirty casual affair morphs into a passionate cat-and-mouse game of life and death stakes? While slightly outdated in some ways, the brilliant storytelling and phenomenal acting chops by Close make this a film worth watching over and over again.
