6 Translation Features to Use on Your Google Pixel 9

If you often find yourself translating text, your Google Pixel 9 offers many smart translation features. These features allow you to quickly and efficiently translate any piece of text on your phone. I’ll show you what these features are.

Live Translate: Automatically Translate On-Screen Text

One of my favorite translation features on the Pixel 9 is Live Translate. With this feature, when your phone detects foreign text on your screen, it automatically offers the option to translate that text. This means no more copying the foreign text, pasting it into a translation app, and then getting the translation.

To use that feature, on your Pixel 9, head into Settings > System > Live Translate. Turn on the “Use Live Translate” toggle. Select “Translate To” and choose the language the text should be translated to.

In the Translate From section, tap “Add a Language” and choose the languages your phone should offer the translation option for. From now on, whenever your phone detects one of your chosen languages, it will show a prompt at the top to quickly translate that text to your predefined language.

Overview Mode: Translate Any On-Screen Text Using the Home Button

If you don’t want to use the Live Translate feature, another option you have is to use the on-screen translation feature. This feature quickly translates all the content on your screen to your chosen language.

To use it, access the screen where foreign text is located. Press and hold the Home button for a few seconds. From the open menu, choose the translate icon.

Your phone will quickly translate all the on-screen content for you.

Google Lens: Translate Text With Your Camera

If you’re shopping for something or you’ve come across an image that’s in a foreign language, use your phone’s Google Lens app to translate the content in the image.

To do that, on your Pixel 9, launch the app drawer and open the Lens app. In the app, at the top, tap “Translate.” Your phone’s camera view will open. Focus on the text you want to translate, and Lens will translate that text for you in real time.

You can change the origins and the target language using the on-screen options.

Google Photos: Translate Text in Saved Photos

If you want to translate the text in a photo that’s saved in Google Photos, you can use an option within the app to translate the content. To do that, open Google Photos and select your photo.

When the photo opens in its full size, in the bottom bar, tap “Lens.” Then, select “Translate” to translate the photo’s contents.

If you want to copy the text, at the bottom, tap “Select All.” To listen to the text, tap “Listen.”

Google Chrome: Translate the Websites You Visit

If you’ve come across a website that’s in a foreign language, use Google Chrome’s built-in translation feature to translate entire webpages.

To do that, open Chrome and access the site you want to translate. Chrome will automatically offer the option to translate the site’s contents. If you don’t see that prompt, in Chrome’s top-right corner, tap the three dots and choose “Translate.”

To manage translation settings, in Chrome’s top-right corner, tap the three dots and choose “Settings.” On the open page, select “Languages.” In the Translation Settings section, turn on “Offer to Send Pages in Other Languages to Google Translate.”

Select “Translate Into This Language” and choose the language Chrome should translate webpages to. Select “Automatically Translate These Languages” and choose which languages Chrome should translate without asking for confirmation. Select “Don’t Offer to Translate These Languages” and select the languages where Chrome should not offer the translation option (likely because you can read these languages).

Gboard: Real-Time Multi-Lingual Typing

Did you know Gboard can perform translations even while you’re still typing text? This feature lets you chat with people in their language without using a translation app.

To use the feature, tap a text field so Gboard opens. In Gboard’s top-left corner, tap the four-square icon. In the open menu, choose “Translate.”

In the box that opens, type the text in your language. Gboard will translate it to the chosen target language. You can select the source and the target language using the given boxes.
