Save Your Wrists With Good Ergonomics

It’s not always easy to achieve good ergonomics in your workspace. While there is no shortage of ergonomic mice and wrist rests to try, none are one-size-fits-all solutions. If a wrist rest puts your wrist and hand at the wrong angle to grab your mouse naturally, it’s not ergonomic for you, despite its label—in fact, it might just make things worse.

I have small hands, and my wrists have been susceptible to muscle strain and injury since an old job caused repetitive motion injuries. Given this, I have to research any ergonomic product I’m interested in extensively before deciding to bite the bullet. But in doing so, I never found anything that would work for me, and eventually I settled for ‘normal’ PC peripherals and an inexpensive wrist rest and hoped for the best.

But as I got older, the strain on my wrists became more pronounced. If I used my mouse too long, I’d feel a shooting pain in the top of my hand—and that’s a bit of a problem considering I work in front of a computer all day, and gaming is my main hobby after work. So, I needed to find a solution.

What to Look for When Buying an Ergonomic Mouse

The increased need for an ergonomic mouse didn’t make searching any easier, however. Vertical mice didn’t appeal to me because of how they placed my wrist, and trackballs were not something I wanted to return to after dealing with them decades ago. But traditional ergonomic mice seemingly had problems of their own. Some looked too big for my hands, others looked too heavy, and if there weren’t any control settings for DPI, the mouse was simply not made for me.

Combine that with how expensive ergonomic mice are on average, and it led to a frustrating situation—which was all the more aggravating because of my hand hurting while looking for a solution.

I was about to settle on the Logitech MX Master 3S, which my colleague loved, but before I took the leap, I had the chance to test out the Razer Pro Click V2. My expectations were tempered at first—since it was a Razer mouse, I knew it’d have the customization options I wanted, but I had no clue how it’d feel in my hand and how much resistance it’d have. In the end, I ended up being pleasantly surprised.

A Solid, Subdued Design

Something that’s interesting about the Razer Pro Click V2 is that the overall design is more subdued than many of Razer’s other offerings. With the Pro Click V2, you get a simple black and silver colorway, devoid of Razer’s typical bright green logo, and a small line of LEDs along the bottom of the mouse that provide an underlight that’s not overly bright or gaudy.

The original version of the Razer Pro Click followed this design philosophy as well, as it was created with the office and productivity in mind. In general, the V2 is very similar to the V1 in terms of shape and ergonomics, with the addition of the LED strip being the most significant change.

The only disappointment is that the Pro Click V2 is only available in black, whereas the various mice of the V1 line were white. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it would be nice to have the option to get a mouse that fits in better with my desk space and other peripherals.

More important than its looks, however, is that the Pro Click V2 simply felt great to use. My hand fit well around my mouse, and it’s easy to press the buttons on the side of the mouse without contorting my thumb or hand to reach them. There are also two scrolling speeds—a ‘Tactile Cycling Mode’ that is closer to the speed an average mouse uses, and a ‘Free-Spin Scrolling’ speed that lets you scroll very, very quickly with one swipe of your finger.

While I mostly used the normal scroll speeds, having the free-spin speed was very helpful when I needed to get to the bottom of an article or webpage while preventing hand strain from having to swipe the scroll wheel repeatedly. Best of all, you switch between the two speeds via a physical button on the Pro Click V2, so there’s no tinkering with software to change between the two modes.

Synapse and Chroma Let You Customize to Your Heart’s Content

It’s important to note that just because the Pro Click V2 is made with productivity in mind doesn’t mean it’s the mouse’s sole use. It’s also very comfortable for gaming, largely thanks to the Razer Synapse app.

The app gives you a plethora of options to customize your mouse, not the least of which is the ability to set up a variety of profiles. Profiles allow you to assign different actions to different buttons (including tilting the scroll wheel to the left and right) and set it up so that the mouse automatically switches profiles when it detects you opening a specific program.

In addition, there are in-depth controls that let you adjust the DPI and polling rate to your liking, which is great not only for gaming but also for moving your mouse around the screen without any excess movement in your wrist and hands.

Meanwhile, the Razer Chroma app allows you to customize the LEDs on your Pro Click V2. Of course, this isn’t beneficial for ergonomics, but the wide number of lighting options and colors available allows you to create pretty much any effect you’re looking for.

Should You Buy the Razer Pro Click V2?

If you don’t have an ergonomic mouse or your current one isn’t gaming-friendly, I can recommend the Razer Pro Click V2. This ergonomic mouse mixes productivity and gaming well, making it so that the Pro Click V2 can tackle nearly everything. There’s no need to swap mice for work and play!

Now, if you already have an ergonomic mouse, you’ll want to consider whether the Pro Click V2 is worth upgrading to. I would recommend doing so since its customization options are hard to beat, and those options will work wonders in terms of making sure you don’t need to move the mouse all over your desk and hurt your wrist more.
