New Telugu sports drama Arjun Chakravarthy was released in cinemas today. With the theme of Kabaddi, the movie is directed by Vikranth Rudra and has Vijay Rama Raju as the main lead. Check out the Review to know how it is.
Set in the late 80s and early 90s, Arjun Chakravarthy (Vijay Rama Raju) follows the Story of an orphan raised by former Kabaddi player Rangaiah (Dayanand Reddy). Arjun dreams of participating in the national-level championship and works tirelessly toward it. Along the way, he falls in love with Devika (Sija Rose). However, on the day of an important Kabaddi match, he chooses the game over her, leaving Devika behind. When he returns, things are no longer the same. Did Devika distance herself from him? What became of Arjun’s dream? Who is Kulkarni (Ajay) in this Story? And ultimately, what fate awaits Arjun?
Plus Points:
The way this film has been made based on real incidents is impressive. It nicely presents how Kabaddi was recognized during the 1980s–90s and the struggles players faced back then. It also shows how an orphan went through humiliations to become a national-level player and the key incidents he encountered in his life.
The character of Arjun Chakravarthy has been portrayed with many variations. Vijay Rama Raju completely immerses himself in this role. His physical transformation to match the Story especially impresses the audience. Performance-wise, too, Vijay Rama Raju has given his best. Dayanand Reddy gets a solid role in this film, and his acting as Rangaiah is captivating.
The point about how a man addicted to alcohol wins back both his game and his life appeals to the audience. The love track in the first half is also somewhat engaging. Another major asset of this movie is its dialogues, many of them strike a chord with the audience. Ajay, as the coach, also impresses. The background score elevates the proceedings well.
Minus Points:
In a period sports drama like this, no matter how strong the emotion is, the way it is handled is crucial. However, in the first half, the director seems to stumble in this aspect. The hero’s focus on the game doesn’t quite connect with the audience.
In addition, the love track in the first half doesn’t impress much. The routine scenes between the lead pair bore the audience. The songs also fail to stand out. In Kabaddi, players usually compete on almost the same level, but in this film, the hero is shown dominating the others, which feels unrealistic.
In such films, where there isn’t much novelty in the Story, the actors must be fully utilized. But here, characters like Sija Rose, Ajay, and the hero’s friend Ramana are not used to their full potential.
Technical Aspects:
Though director Vikranth Rudra chose a routine period sports drama storyline, the way he added an emotional touch is appreciable. However, he should have been more careful with the screenplay, as many scenes feel dragged.
The cinematography is a strong pillar of this film, realistically recreating the 1980s–90s atmosphere. Music-wise, the songs don’t create much impact, but the background score works well. Editing could have been much sharper. The production values are good.
Verdict:
On the whole, Arjun Chakravarthy is a sports drama that manages to impress to some extent with its emotional touch. Vijay Rama Raju’s performance, his dedication, and emotions in the Story worked well. On the flip side, the routine backdrop, unconvincing love track, unimpressive songs, and dragged-out scenes turn out to be minus points. For those who enjoy sports dramas, this film can be watched, but going in with low expectations is advisable.
