‘Back to the Future’s Re-Release Sends it Hurtling Past Tom Cruise’s Best Action Movie and Onto an Impressive List

With the likes of Dwayne Johnson’s The Smashing Machine and Tron: Ares disappointing at the recent box office, one of the worst in modern history, it’s a sight for sore eyes to see one of the best movies of all time make its way onto the big screen for a special celebration. 40 years since it first blew audiences away, Back to the Future returned to theaters, leaving flaming tracks in its wake. What’s more, the film’s return to the big screen hasn’t disappointed, drawing an impressive weekend haul that has helped it reach a new box office milestone.

Officially, thanks to earning $4.7 million from 2,290 U.S. theaters across the weekend, Back to the Future is now one of the 200 highest-grossing movies in American box office history. In total, the Robert Zemeckis movie has earned $393 million in global revenue, split between a domestic haul of $220 million and a further $173 million from overseas markets. In taking the #200 spot in the all-time rankings, Back to the Future has knocked Mission: Impossible – Fallout, the sixth installment in the iconic action franchise, out of the top 200. Regularly cited as one of the best action movies of the past decade, Tom Cruise‘s sixth turn as Ethan Hunt made almost $800 million at the box office, with a majority coming from international ticket sales. “In this 1980s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the ’50s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. Traveling through time in a modified DeLorean car, Marty encounters young versions of his parents (Crispin Glover, Lea Thompson), and must make sure that they fall in love or he’ll cease to exist. Four decades might’ve passed, and many other movies from the time might’ve aged like sour milk, but Back to the Future is still as great as ever. The duo of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as Marty McFly and Emmett “Doc” Brown is one of the best in cinema history, and has helped the film earn its bulletproof reputation as a classic. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the critics’ consensus reads, “Inventive, funny, and breathlessly constructed, Back to the Future is a rousing time-travel adventure with an unforgettable spirit.”
