Best Gas String Trimmers of 2025

If you’ve never used a string trimmer, try out both curved-shaft and straight-shaft models in a home center or hardware store to see which feels better. In general, straight-shaft models have a longer reach. But some users (particularly those shorter than 5 feet, 6 inches or so) may prefer curved-shaft models because they can be easier to control.

You may also encounter powered bases with attachments, tools that feature a shared gas engine with removable heads for a string trimmer, a hedge clipper, an edger, or a pole saw. These tools may seem like a bargain because you’re paying less than you would be buying each separately, but our testing has found that their performance is worse than what you’d typically get from stand-alone tools.
