Cars are becoming greener, with better fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and even more recycled components. But it can be difficult to cut through the marketing clutter to find good models that fulfill that promise.

Consumer Reports gives a Green Choice designation to the top 20 percent of new vehicles on the market with the cleanest emissions to help car shoppers find the models that will reduce their carbon footprint the most. Green Choice cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, and minivans are indicated in our ratings by a green leaf icon. They’re gas-powered, hybrid, and electric, although over time, the top 20 percent are increasingly plug-in hybrids and EVs as more electrified models come to market.
