Pictos and Luminas are fundamental mechanics in Clair Obscur Expedition 33. They are important to build strong characters and play a very important role in the game. However, they can also be highly confusing to new players, especially those who are unfamiliar with similar mechanics in games. Want to learn how they work so you know your way around them? Here is a complete guide on what Pictos and Luminas are in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 and how you can use them to build your characters.
What are Pictos in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Pictos are items with passive traits that also boost specific attributes. They are found in the overworld and can be equipped on characters. Each character can only equip three Pictos at a time. Other than collecting Pictos from the ground, you can obtain them by defeating mini-bosses or purchasing them from Merchants.
Each Picto boosts two different attributes and comes with a special trait. Pictos also have levels, with higher-level Pictos having better stat boosts. However, the main feature of a Pictos is its special trait, which grants different effects like +1 AP on a perfect Dodge.
Although you can only equip three Pictos at a time on a character, using the Luminas mechanics, you can equip more Pictos effects without equipping them in the Pictos slots. Win four fights with a Pictos equipped on a character to unlock its Luminas effect. The Luminas effect of the Pictos allows characters to equip the Pictos effect using the Luminas points instead of consuming a Pictos slot.
This also allows you to equip the same Luminas effect on multiple characters at the same time without the need to equip it on every character. Let’s understand Luminas in more detail.
What is Luminas in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Luminas is a limited point resource for each character, and it can be used to equip unlocked Pictos effects. Every character starts with a limited number of Luminas, and each Luminas effect comes with a specific cost. Each character can only equip as many Luminas effects as the number of points they have.
For example, characters with 9 Luminas points can equip one Luminas effect of 9 cost, or three Luminas effects of 3 cost each. To use the Luminas effect on a character, open their Pictos slot tab and press ‘C’ to open the Luminas tab. Select the Luminas Effect you want to equip on the character and exit.
Also, not every Luminas effect will be good for each character. For example, having the Burning Shots effect on a character that you don’t use Free Aim on will be a complete waste. Also, equipping a Pictos on a character also automatically equips the Luminas effect of that Pictos without consuming Luminas points. As you unlock more skills and weapons for your characters, you will quickly find yourself changing the Luminas effects for better combos.
Another great thing about Luminas is that you can increase the number later in the game, but you cannot increase the Pictos slots for each character.
How to Increase Lumina in Clair Obscur Expedition 33
Increasing Luminas in Clair Obscur Expedition 33 is pretty simple, but requires you to find the item Colour of Lumina. This item can be found all over the overworld and is generally marked with a Pink light. Other than that, you can also buy Colour of Lumina from the Merchants.
After you have obtained Colour of Lumina, next you need to unlock the Curator for your camp by progressing through Act 1.
The Curator is unlocked after you find Maelle in the Mansion. After that, you can head back to the camp to find the Curator waiting for you. Once you have unlocked the Curator, here is how you can increase Lumina in Clair Obscur Expedition 33:
- First, head back to the Camp and look for the Curator. He will be inside a small cave.
- Speak with the Curator and select the Upgrade Expedition Resources option.
- Click on the characters to increase their Lumina. Each Colour of Lumina can increase one Lumina point for a character.
Remember to properly ration your Color of Lumina for all characters, as they are a limited resource in the game. You don’t want to increase the Lumina level of a character that doesn’t need it.
