Visakhapatnam: Doctors at KIMS Seethammadhara Hospital, Visakhapatnam, performed a complex surgery to remove a 4.5-kilogram cancerous tumor from the liver of a 16-year-old boy.
For over a month, he endured recurring abdominal pain and fever that left him weak and drained. Initially, doctors at other hospitals suspected a liver infection and prescribed medicines, but when his condition failed to improve, he was brought to KIMS Seethammadhara Hospital, Visakhapatnam.
After detailed investigations, the medical team confirmed the shocking diagnosis – a rare form of liver cancer. Dr. Muralidhar Nambada, Senior GI and Liver Surgeon, along with Dr. Ravi Chandra Reddy, performed a highly complex surgery to remove the tumor.
“When the boy arrived, his stomach and legs were swollen, clearly pointing to a serious liver problem. Tests confirmed that he was suffering from an extremely rare cancer called Malignant Hepatic Angiomyelolipoma. The tumor had taken up nearly half of the right side of his liver. CT and MRI scans revealed its size, location, and spread,” said Dr. Muralidhar.
The doctors decided to operate immediately. The surgery lasted six and a half hours. The tumor weighed 4.5 kg—almost the size of a football. “It was a huge challenge to remove such a massive tumor without complications. We had to carefully control bleeding, completely clear the tumor, and at the same time preserve the healthy part of the liver. Since the patient is only 16, his liver has strong regenerative capacity, making it vital to protect the remaining portion,” the doctors explained.
Thanks to meticulous planning and precise execution, the boy underwent surgery successfully. His recovery was quick—he was discharged just five days later. He has since completed six cycles of chemotherapy and is now back to his normal routine.
