By his own account, Eric Rock has taken “a winding path” in his career.
Eric Rock, the CEO of Percipio Health, talks about the company, AI, and his career as a founder in the latest episode of Healthy Bottom Line, a podcast from Chief Healthcare Executive.
Rock founded ProHost, the first restaurant table reservation system, a company acquired by OpenTable.
He later moved into the healthcare industry, founding MEDHOST, which developed a touchscreen medical record system used in emergency departments in hundreds of hospitals. Rock then founded Vivify Health, a digital health company now owned by Optum. Vivify works with health plans and providers and offering remote patient monitoring services.
Today, Rock is the CEO and co-founder of Percipio Health, which offers patient health monitoring using smartphone apps, without additional devices. He talked about his healthcare career and monitoring patients in the latest episode of Healthy Bottom Line, a podcast from Chief Healthcare Executive®.
“As an engineer at heart, but always surrounded by great clinicians that are creating our product, my passion really drove towards artificial intelligence,” he says. And that led to Percipio Health.
Rock says his experience outside of the healthcare industry, including his work in refining restaurant reservations, has had benefits.
“Those efficiency gains that were just literally replicated, including some of the user experience for busy emergency departments, was an amazing analogy,” he says. “But let me share that healthcare is absolutely far more complex.”
With Percipio Health, the company uses an app to help get readings on patients. The company says patients can use the camera in their smartphones for a face scan, and get readings on vital signs such as blood pressure and respiratory rate.
“This is the first-ever opportunity to represent scalable care to an entire population and also scalable health risk assessments to identify those that have the need for those services,” Rock says.
Rock sees it as “an entirely new market.”
“This isn’t just a wellness platform and engagement platform, nor is it remote patient monitoring …. So this is a kind of a population health meets remote patient monitoring merged together,” he says.
Percipio Health is aiming to reach as many patients as possible.
But he says, “Our sweet spot is really those that have been underserved.”
The company is aiming to help health plans and health systems keep patients healthy, and to avoid costly hospital stays.
“It is a population-wide solution, but that underserved component has certainly, over time, been that rising risk population, and identifying those risks early, providing tools in which they can mitigate and manage the population easily at scale,” he says.
The company is using AI but has a strong governance process, he says.
“We’re not using AI in a way that’s replacing clinicians at all. We’re simply augmenting them,” Rock says.
