Facebook, Instagram, Threads, and WhatsApp suffered a massive worldwide Wednesday afternoon, with services impacted in varying degrees based on user’s region.
According to DownDetector, the outage occurred at approximately 12:40 PM ET, with many users unable to access the services through the websites and apps or send messages through WhatsApp.
When users attempted to access Facebook, they were greeted with errors stating, “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”
Meta does not have a status page for its online services, but the status page for the business platform does not show sizeable service outages.
While services in some regions started to be restored around 1:20 PM ET, other users still reported being unable to access the platforms.
Meta acknowledged the outage on X, stating that they are working on restoring access to the services.
“We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps,” Meta posted on X.
“We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience.”
Meta previously suffered an outage in March that logged Facebook and Instagram users worldwide out of the sites and prevented them from logging in again, stating their passwords were incorrect.
In 2021, the company was hit with another outage after suffering a worldwide DNS outage.
Update 12/11/24 07:21 PM ET: Meta shared another status update on X stating that the outage is almost resolved.
“Thanks for bearing with us! We’re 99% of the way there – just doing some last checks. We apologize to those who’ve been affected by the outage,” reads the post from Meta.
