How a Mobile TV Stand Solved My Bedroom TV Problems

Having a TV in the bedroom is always a nice luxury, but it’s not always possible, so you might end up watching something on your tablet or smartphone instead. We wanted a TV in our bedroom, but the logistics just weren’t right.

After thinking about it for a while, I came up with the idea of buying a rolling TV stand, like you’d see at your workplace, and it turns out it’s pretty much the optimal solution that’s opened up even more possibilities.

My Wife Wanted a Bedroom TV, but There’s Nowhere to Put One

In our previous home, the bedroom had a layout that allowed for a TV to be set up across from where we slept, but in our current place, that wall has built-in closets, and the bed only has one viable position. So, if anyone wanted to watch something in bed, it meant grabbing a phone or tablet and holding it or propping it up awkwardly.

My wife always enjoyed the option of watching TV in bed in winter or over the weekend when we can sleep a little longer, so at some point I had to tackle this issue. At first, my only real idea was to do a wall-mounted TV arm, and then pair it with a cheap 32-inch TV from TCL or Hisense.

This had multiple problems, however. First, the angle would never be comfortable, since we’d have to watch off to the side. Second, since we rent I need to get permission to install any wall-mounted solution, and pay to have it removed when we leave. This is fine for the living room where the landlord would want me to leave the professional wall-mount installation anyway, but not ideal for the bedroom.

A Rolling Stand Solved Every Problem in My Way

Then I remembered that in my previous more corporate jobs we always used our big flat-screen TVs on rolling stands. I’ve given hundreds of presentations in my life, and invariably I’d wheel one of these setups from one classroom or boardroom to the next. So why not get that for home use? It’s not something that’s ever occured to me before, but the more I thought about it, the more sense it made.

We didn’t need a TV in the bedroom all the time, and so we could simply wheel it into a corner, or wheel it into a different room entirely. The height is easily adjustable, and it has shelves for consoles, TV streaming boxes, remotes, laptops, and whatever else you want.

Now I Can Use This TV Anywhere

Beyond giving us a convenient way to watch TV in bed when we want to, the stand means I can wheel this TV anywhere on the same floor. If we have guests sleeping over, it takes 30 seconds to wheel it to the guest bedroom. If I want to play video games or watch a different program to my wife on our other couch, well it’s just as easy. Since all the wiring is self-contained on the stand using velcro cable management ties, it’s literally just a matter of plugging in a power cord.

Since we have two Switch consoles, and hardly ever use the second dock, I decided to attach it to the stand, and now either of use can get some big-screen Switch gameplay anywhere while the main TV is tied up with the PS5.

I Might Do This Instead of Wall Mounting in Future

I was a little worried that a stand that costs less than $100 would be flimsy somehow, but the model I got (which is from a local retailer, and not currenly on Amazon that I could find) is rated for up to a 70-inch TV. My measly 55-inch TV doesn’t even make it sweat, and since I won’t be subjecting this to corporate levels of rolling around and bumping into stuff, I don’t expect it to pick up much wear and tear.

I like it so much, in fact, that I’m considering simply using a stand like this the next time I would otherwise have wall-mounted a TV. Not only would it let me adjust things like viewing distance on the fly, and avoid the cost and hassle of a wall-mount installation, it also lets me change the arrangement of the living room or other spaces around without permanent or semi-permanent alterations.

There’s Lots of Stand Variety Too

I bought a pretty basic no-name stand as an experiment, but there’s actually heaps of variety when it comes to these stands. Some of them are quite fancy looking, and would fit in nicely with an upmarket interior. There are pricier ones with extra drawers and more cable management features, and then there are cheap minimalist ones that are more in line with my own sense of aesthetics.

I’m still a little mad at myself for not realizing that there was such a cheap and simple fix sooner, but at least know I can enjoy the big-screen TV experience snug under a blanket as winter rapidly approached down here in the Southern Hemisphere.
