How to install ChatGPT as an app on Windows 11, 10

UPDATED 10/18/2024: You can install ChatGPT as an app on Windows 11 (and 10), and in this guide, I’ll teach you how to complete this task. ChatGPT is an advanced language model developed by OpenAI that is capable of generating human-like text responses similar to the Microsoft Copilot, which uses the same technology.

Although ChatGPT is easily accessible from your web browser, third-party apps, or mobile device, it’s now possible to install the native Windows app, but only if you have a ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, or Education subscription. If you don’t have a paid version of the chatbot AI, it’s possible to install the ChatGPT as a Progressive Web App (PWA) through Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome.

A Progressive Web App (PWA) is a technology that enables websites to deliver a seamless app-like experience. It gives users offline functionality, notifications, automatic updates, effortless installation, and uninstallation. However, it is up to the developer to implement these functionalities.

In this guide, I will teach you the steps I usually use to install web services like ChatGPT app as an app on Windows 11 or Windows 10.

Install ChatGPT official app on Windows 11

On Windows 11 (and 10), you have three ways to install the official app for ChatGPT (preview). You can use the Microsoft Store app, you can use the Command Prompt with the Windows Package Manager tool, or you can install the app using the Dev Home app.

From Microsoft Store

To install the ChatGPT native app on Windows 11 (or 10), use these steps:

  1. Open the ChatGPT app download page.

  2. Click the “View in Store” button.

  3. Click the Get (or Install) button from the Microsoft Store.

From Command Prompt

To install the chatbot from OpenAI on Windows with commands, use these steps:

  1. Open Start.

  2. Search for Command Prompt (PowerShell or Terminal),  right-click the top result, and choose the Run as administrator option.

  3. Type the following command to install the ChatGPT app and press Enter:

    winget install --id 9nt1r1c2hh7j

From Dev Home

To install the ChatGPT app using Dev Home, use these steps:

  1. Open Dev Home.

  2. Click on Machine configuration.

  3. Click the Install applications setting.

  4. Search for 9nt1r1c2hh7j in the search box.

  5. Click the plus (+) button.

  6. Click the Next button.

  7. Check the “I agree and want to continue” option.

  8. Click the Set up button.

After you complete the steps, the official app to access ChatGPT from OpenAI will be installed on your computer.

At the time of writing, the first preview of the ChatGPT app for Windows is only available to paid users. However, since the app is a simple web wrapper for the web version of the chatbot, you can also install it using Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome with the instructions below.

The only difference I can find between the official app and the web application is that with the native app, you can use the “Alt + Space” shortcut to quickly open the app.

If you want to remove the app, you can perform this task like any other app from Settings > Apps > Installed apps by opening the ChatGPT app menu and choosing the “Uninstall” option.

  5. Select the Apps submenu.

To install ChatGPT from Chrome, use these steps:

  1. Open Google Chrome.

  2. Open the ChatGPT website.

  3. Click the Customize and Control (three-dotted) button in the top-right corner.

Once you complete the steps, Google Chrome will install ChatGPT as a web app on Windows.

Uninstall ChatGPT app from Google Chrome

To uninstall the ChatGPT app from Chrome, use these steps:

  1. Open Google Chrome.

  2. Open this settings page:

    chrome://apps
  3. Right-click the ChatGPT app and select the “Remove from Chrome” option.

It’s also possible to uninstall the ChatGPT app from Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the app, and click the “Uninstall” button. Or, from the Start menu, right-click the app and select the “Uninstall” button.

It’s important to note the irony of Microsoft saying Windows 11 is the platform of choice for AI development after investing more than $10 billion, yet OpenAI is prioritizing its app for macOS first because that’s where users are. However, during the announcement of GPT-4o, OpenAI said that a ChatGPT app for Windows will be available later this year.
