But a lot of automatic transmissions have shifters with settings that can make driving more fun, reduce brake wear and tear, and give you an edge in certain driving situations.
“For decades, most new cars have come equipped with transmission features that can help you drive your car more safely, and maybe even give you a little more enjoyment,” says John Ibbotson, chief mechanic at CR’s Auto Test Center. “Whether you’re descending a steep hill, driving through deep snow, or taking off onto the highway from an on-ramp, there are ways to make your transmission do more for you.”
