‘Michael Jackson: An American Tragedy’ – Episode Guide

Episode One: With unique access to friends and family including Jackson’s sister La Toya, this episode charts Michael Jackson’s journey from child performer to a deeply troubled musical icon.

Behind The Jackson 5, the family act that launched Michael to fame, was a household described by insiders as driven by fear as much as by talent. An offer of a film role helps Michael gain independence from his controlling father, causing tensions and resentments within the family. This leads to Michael’s search for authentic connections elsewhere, including among the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

In 1982, Michael releases his masterpiece Thriller, catapulting him to megastardom and turning him into a global business empire. But the pressures of fame begin to weigh heavily, and colleagues also describe a pattern in Michael’s behaviour: a preference for the company of children.

Episode Two: In August 1991, Michael signs the most lucrative deal in music history with Sony Music and prepares for what his team believes will be a landmark year.

Then, a 13-year-old boy accuses Michael of child sexual abuse. Detectives describe the shock of investigating the world’s most famous performer, while inside Michael’s camp, aides recall disbelief and a frantic effort to keep Michael’s worldwide tour, business empire and public image intact.

As the story breaks, police search Michael’s home, and the media storm intensifies. Michael publicly denies the allegations, condemning what he calls a ‘trial by media’.

Episode Three: Following Michael Jackson from the shockwaves of the Martin Bashir documentary Living with Michael Jackson to the final act of his life — and the battle over what he leaves behind.

In the aftermath of the documentary, insiders describe a man in free-fall: frightened, financially exposed and increasingly isolated. Manager Dieter Wiesner recalls Michael rallying his fanbase, while rumours of mounting debts and allegations escalate.

When 12-year-old Gavin Arvizo goes to police, prosecutor Ron Zonen asserts he knew it was ‘an inappropriate relationship’. Jackson is arrested and charged, and becomes the centre of a trial that consumes a small town and the global media.

What else can I watch on BBC iPlayer?

Lots – including “The Other Bennet Sister”, “Riot Women”, “Mr Nobody Against Putin”, “Tár”, “Doctor Who: Joy to the World”, “Strictly Come Dancing”, and plenty more.
