I tested ChatGPT-5 vs DeepSeek with 9 prompts — here’s the surprising winner

ChatGPT-5, OpenAI’s newest flagship model, arrived just over a week ago with promises of sharper reasoning, smoother conversations and more natural-sounding voice interactions. It quickly proved itself as the frontrunner in recent AI faceoffs, blending polish with a human-like delivery, making it feel like a real collaborative partner. But it’s also had it’s share of detractors, compelling Sam Altman to issue an apology for a rough rollout.

DeepSeek, which rolled out in early 2025, has been a rising challenger built with an emphasis on structured reasoning and real-world practicality. While it may not match GPT-5’s flair for tone, it stands out for its methodical explanations, step-by-step clarity and grounded responses, qualities that make it particularly appealing for problem-solving and task execution.

Both models boast advanced reasoning, conversational skills and practical utility, but how do they actually perform when tested side by side? To find out, I ran a series of prompts across math puzzles, project planning, family support and creative storytelling. The results reveal not just strengths and weaknesses, but clear differences in style. Here’s what happened when the two faced off.

1. Logic puzzle

Prompt: “A farmer has 17 sheep, and all but 9 run away. How many are left? Explain your reasoning step by step.”

GPT-5 offered good use of formatting and bold text for emphasis and delivered a correct and concise response that is easy to follow.

DeepSeek offered a more thorough step-by-step breakdown with clear numbering and mathematical verification while explicitly addressing both interpretative and mathematical approaches.

Winner: DeepSeek wins for more detailed reasoning that better fulfills the “explain your reasoning step by step” aspect of the prompt. For a math problem that often trips people up due to its wording, DeepSeek’s more thorough explanation makes it the superior response.

2. Step-by-step math

Prompt: “Teach me how to calculate the standard deviation of this dataset: [4, 8, 6, 5, 3]. Walk me through it step by step without giving the answer upfront.”

GPT-5 worked through the problem by showing the work but did not support the user by “teaching” as the prompt requested.

DeepSeek clearly offered numbered steps to solve the problem while walking the user through every aspect of the problem; exactly as the prompt asked.

Winner: DeepSeek wins for treating the prompt as a genuine teaching moment, explaining concepts and encouraging the student to work through calculations themselves. GPT essentially worked through most of the problem while asking the student to fill in a few blanks.

3. Project planning

Prompt: “Propose a 4-week plan to reduce customer support response time by 30% using AI tools. Budget: $5,000.”

GPT-5 had unrealistic budget estimates, tool constraints and overall, less actionable advice. However, the model better addressed the human-AI collaboration aspect and feedback loops.

DeepSeek offered realistic targets, a practical focus and concrete tool recommendations.

Winner: DeepSeek wins for a response that feels more like something you could actually implement with the given constraints, while GPT-5’s was more theoretical. For a business scenario with specific budget and timeline requirements, practical feasibility wins.

4. Budget coaching

Prompt: “Coach me through creating a monthly household budget. Ask me about my expenses, income, and goals, then help me build it step by step.”

GPT-5 did a nice job breaking down the budget into specific categories and then highlighting what should happen next.

DeepSeek actually broke down the coaching into steps to help guide the user through their monthly budget.

Winner: DeepSeek wins (edging out just slightly) for this particular prompt. The prompt specifically asked to be “coached through” the process and to “ask me about” expenses/income/goals, emphasizing the interactive, guided nature. DeepSeek better captures this coaching spirit.

5. Parenting support

Prompt: “My 10-year-old and 8-year-old won’t stop bickering. Suggest strategies that are practical, age-appropriate and backed by psychology.”

GPT-5 responded with good psychology backing and research references and practical, immediate tactics but the response was less organized overall and offered fewer specific examples.

DeepSeek organized the response with a more comprehensive tone and structure. It offered immediate practical implementation guidance combined with specific, actionable language.

Winner: DeepSeek wins for a response that felt like it was written by someone who has actually dealt with sibling conflicts, and it anticipated user follow-up questions, providing specific scripts for overwhelmed parents.

6. Meal planning

Prompt: “I’m a recent graduate and only have $50 for food for a week. I’m a vegetarian and prefer to eat gluten free. Help me come up with a healthy meal plan for the week and include a shopping list.”

GPT-5 created a clean, scannable list with a good use of emojis and organization. The chatbot offered good variety in breakfast and lunch options but the budget didn’t completely add up and ultimately exceeded the $50 budget.

DeepSeek delivered a more detailed cost breakdown with actual prices ($48.50 total) that stayed within the $50 budget. It also offered a zero-waste approach that explicitly mentions using all ingredients purchased. Also, the AI offered better meal variety with specific recipes for seven different dinners.

Winner: DeepSeek wins for the most practical and actionable response. The detailed cost tracking, waste-reduction focus and nutritional completeness make it more helpful for the real-world constraint of being a broke recent graduate.

7.  Storytelling

Prompt: “Write a 150-word funny story about an alien trying bubble tea for the first time, and end with a twist.”

GPT-5 wrote a solid story with humor and a solid setup.

DeepSeek crafted a well written story with a genuinely clever twist ending.

Winner: GPT-5 wins for a more polished and cleaner narrative flow. Although the twist is less clever, overall, the creativity from GPT-5 was better.

8.  Cultural Understanding

Prompt: “Summarize the plot of Stranger Things in a way that makes sense to someone who has never seen it, like you’re explaining to a 10-year-old.”

GPT-5 sounded like an actual person explaining the show to a child. The explanation was conversational and clear, but not overly verbose.

DeepSeek responded with format overload and far too much detail for a child. The response would be harder to follow for a 10-year-old

Winner: GPT-5 wins for striking the right balance for explaining to a 10-year-old. It’s simple without being condescending and uses relatable comparisons.

Prompt: “Create a social media caption that’s witty, relatable and likely to go viral for a little mouse wearing sunglasses and floaties on the beach

GPT-5 delivered a funny, yet somewhat mediocre post in comparison to the many options from DeepSeek.

DeepSeek was an over achiever and offered several social media posts, all witty and had the potential to help the post go viral.

Winner: DeepSeek wins for going above and beyond, letting the user choose from a variety of social post options.

Overall winner: DeepSeek

After nine rounds, the scorecard tips heavily in DeepSeek’s favor. Its step-by-step explanations, realistic planning and thorough coaching consistently edged out GPT-5’s more polished but occasionally more surface-level answers.

Still, GPT-5 proved it has an edge in areas requiring tone, flow and cultural understanding, where sounding natural matters as much as being correct.

The bottom line overall is that DeepSeek is one of the few chatbots that proves it can keep up with OpenAI’s most advanced model. Together, both models show how different AI strengths can complement each other, benefiting users with smarter, more versatile tools.
